Ten open-air sundowners at the Musikmuschel on the Westerland promenade
For decades, the Musikmuschel (music shell) on the Westerland promenade has been Sylt's cultural meeting point by the sea – a shell-shaped pavilion overlooking the North Sea, a traditional venue for concerts, spa events, and summer gatherings. Since the summer of 2023, it has regularly become an open dance floor: Sundowner Rhythm & Beats is the concept launched by Sylt Island Tourism Service GmbH (ISTS), turning sunset into a recurring mini open-air event.
The format is clearly defined: a DJ plays electronic sets, heavy on house and deep house, accompanied by live musicians on saxophone, violin, percussion, or drums – the combination creates a sound with more warmth than pure DJ sets, stylistically bridging the gap between Café del Mar and urban lounge culture. Classic sundowner vibes, but curated and of high quality.
Regulars in the lineup include DJs such as Markus Prange, N-Sure, Size, Flaek, Tom Sass, Saschu, Sönke, Kento, and Matula. They are regularly joined by Valerio Lombardo (Drums & Percussion) and Luqo (Saxophone). The lineup varies for each event.
The events are free to attend, but presenting a valid Sylt guest card (Kurkarte) is required for most concerts – a common practice on many North Frisian islands. Holidaymakers staying on Sylt automatically receive their guest card as part of their accommodation fee. Day visitors can purchase the card at the beach.
Sylt is Germany's northernmost island, belonging to the Nordfriesland district, and hosts one of Schleswig-Holstein's most diverse event calendars – from the Windsurf World Cup to the Sylt Truths literary series. Sundowner Rhythm & Beats fills the gap between a day at the beach and an evening at a restaurant with a format that appeals to a younger, more urban audience and celebrates the island's sunset atmosphere.
In 2026, Sundowner Rhythm & Beats will once again combine electronic music with live instruments at the Musikmuschel in Westerland – every Sunday (with one event on Whit Monday) between May and September. Food trucks and drink stands open from 11:00 AM, with the main Sundowner program running from 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM.
Each event features a DJ playing sets, accompanied by live musicians on saxophone, violin, drums, or percussion. The lineup varies – current lineups will be communicated on insel-sylt.de and via ISTS social media channels.
