The world's only PWA Super Grand Slam event
Since 1984, the Windsurf World Cup on Sylt has been the undisputed highlight of the international windsurfing season. Every year at the end of September, over 100 athletes from more than 25 nations gather on the North Sea island in the district of Nordfriesland, in the state of Schleswig-Holstein — including German wave superstar Philip Köster. The event is considered the last European stop on the PWA World Tour and regularly decides the world championship titles in the Wave and Freestyle disciplines.
What makes Sylt unique worldwide: It is the only event on the PWA World Tour to bear the status of "Super Grand Slam". This means that all three classic disciplines — Wave, Freestyle, and Slalom — are held concurrently, supplemented by Race and Foil. With prize money of €85,000, Sylt is the highest-paying event on the entire tour.
The organizers have expanded Sylt into a ten-day beach festival that goes far beyond pure sports broadcasting:
The Brandenburger Strand offers a rare combination of consistent wind, challenging waves, and perfect spectator proximity — athletes often sail just 200 meters from the shore. The mix of sport, chic island atmosphere, and the high-end island chic of the Westerland promenade makes Sylt an event that also attracts a non-windsurfing audience. Over the years, legends such as Björn Dunkerbeck, Robby Naish, and more recently Philip Köster have shaped the event.
With roots in the early 1980s, the Sylt World Cup is one of Europe's oldest and most prestigious water sports events. For over four decades, the competition at Brandenburger Strand has decided more world championship titles than any other tour event and is one of the defining brands of the island of Sylt itself.
From September 25 to October 4, 2026, the Brandenburger Strand in Westerland will once again transform into the mecca of windsurfing. Over 100 athletes from more than 25 nations are registered. The competition is considered crucial for the 2026 Wave and Freestyle World Championships.
A 500-meter festival area along the beach promenade features exhibitors, lounges, food trucks, restrooms, and an evening program with DJs and live music. Dogs on a leash are allowed.
The daily schedule depends directly on wind and wave conditions. Disciplines are scheduled flexibly — the decision on which competitions will run is made at each daily briefing at 9:00 AM. The following program structure is expected based on experience:
Live stream continuously via Joyn and on a large screen on the beach. Updated program at windsurfworldcup.de.
Admission to the festival grounds is free with a Sylt guest card. Day visitors without a guest card: €4.10. Opening hours daily 10:00 AM to 10:30 PM (Sunday to Thursday) or 11:30 PM (Friday, Saturday).
Sylt is accessible by car/train via the Hindenburgdamm — the car transport train from Niebüll takes cars to the island. Direct trains from Hamburg-Altona (3 hrs) and Munich (with a change). Sylt Airport has direct flights from Düsseldorf, Munich, and Frankfurt. The Brandenburger Strand is a 15-minute walk from Westerland station.
Free admission to the entire event area with a valid Sylt guest card. Day visitors without a guest card pay €4.10 admission. Open daily from 10:00 AM, closing at 10:30 PM (Sunday to Thursday) or 11:30 PM (Friday and Saturday).
Very early booking of hotels and holiday apartments is required — the season is still in full swing at the beginning of October. Alternatively, day trips via the Sylt Shuttle from the mainland.
All competitions are broadcast live via Joyn — for those who cannot be there in person.
