About Musik am Meer

Musik am Meer is one of the oldest concert series on Sylt: from May to October, there are daily open-air concerts at the Musikmuschel in Westerland, the characteristic shell-shaped open-air stage directly on the promenade. Up to two performances per day — usually at 11 am and 3 pm — combine spa orchestra, classical music, shanty choir, pop, rock, and jazz. A regular performer is Hannos Beach Band, who plays on stage almost daily with over 250 performances per season. The opening concert is traditionally on May 1st at 3 pm, and the festival runs until the end of October. Free admission with the Sylter Gästekarte — a concept that makes the event one of the most democratic cultural offerings on the island.

Westerland and the Musikmuschel

Westerland is the main town on the island of Sylt in the Nordfriesland district in the state of Schleswig-Holstein and, with around 9,000 inhabitants, is also the island's urban center. Located directly on the beach promenade is the Musikmuschel — a characteristic shell-shaped open-air stage that has served as a free concert venue for guests and locals for decades.

A Summer Institution

Musik am Meer is organized by the Sylt Island Tourism Service (ISTS) and is one of the oldest concert series in Northern Germany. From the beginning of May to the end of October, the program runs daily (in reasonable weather) — usually two concerts per day, typically at 11 am and 3 pm. Concerts only take place if the temperature is above 16 °C and humidity does not endanger the sensitive instruments.

Program — from Shanty to Classical

  • Hannos Beach Band — six musicians plus vocals, regular act with over 250 performances in the season. Pop, hits, evergreens, musical melodies
  • Sexteto Madroño (July–August 2026) — Classical, Pop, Jazz, World Music
  • Sylter Shanty Chor — maritime tradition
  • Westerländer Musikverein — brass music and marches
  • The Memories Sylt — Classics from 60 years of pop history
  • Sundowner Rhythm & Beats — DJ and live acts on ten evenings between May and September

Free Admission — With Guest Card

Overnight guests on Sylt receive the Sylter Gästekarte, granting free access to all concerts in the series. The program is also accessible without a guest card — the Musikmuschel is open, and you can listen from the promenade. This makes the series an accessible cultural offering that many Sylt guests enjoy during their stay.
