Six months of open-air concerts at the Musikmuschel on Sylt — from spa orchestra to jazz
Westerland is the main town on the island of Sylt in the Nordfriesland district in the state of Schleswig-Holstein and, with around 9,000 inhabitants, is also the island's urban center. Located directly on the beach promenade is the Musikmuschel — a characteristic shell-shaped open-air stage that has served as a free concert venue for guests and locals for decades.
Musik am Meer is organized by the Sylt Island Tourism Service (ISTS) and is one of the oldest concert series in Northern Germany. From the beginning of May to the end of October, the program runs daily (in reasonable weather) — usually two concerts per day, typically at 11 am and 3 pm. Concerts only take place if the temperature is above 16 °C and humidity does not endanger the sensitive instruments.
Overnight guests on Sylt receive the Sylter Gästekarte, granting free access to all concerts in the series. The program is also accessible without a guest card — the Musikmuschel is open, and you can listen from the promenade. This makes the series an accessible cultural offering that many Sylt guests enjoy during their stay.
The Musik am Meer 2026 season traditionally starts on May 1st at 3 pm at the Musikmuschel Westerland and runs until the end of October. With an outdoor temperature of at least 16 °C, concerts take place daily — usually two per day, around 11 am and 3 pm.
The main act is again Hannos Beach Band with over 250 performances in the season. In addition, Sexteto Madroño, the Sylter Shanty Chor, the Westerländer Musikverein, and The Memories Sylt are on the program. The Sundowner Rhythm & Beats series complements the season with ten DJ and live evenings between May and September.

Sylt can be reached by the Marschbahn (Westerland station), by car train from Niebüll, or by ferry from Rømø. From Westerland station, it's a 10-minute walk to the Musikmuschel on the promenade.
Free with the Sylter Gästekarte. However, concerts are public — you can listen from the promenade even without a guest card.
Seating is available at the Musikmuschel — additional chairs are set up in good weather. Concerts take place at temperatures of at least 16 °C; cancellations may occur in case of storms or rain.
