About Sylter Wintermarkt
Sylter Wintermarkt — edition 2026
Wintermarkt 2026/2027 — The Island Classic
From December 4, 2026, to January 2, 2027, the Neue Mitte Westerland transforms into the Sylter Wintermarkt. Organizers: Sylt Event GmbH in cooperation with the municipality of Sylt and several sponsors. The lovingly designed Advent huts are located on the wind-sheltered inner-city area — this edition again features the rotating "Sylt Handicrafts" artist's hut, which provides a stage for changing islanders.
Sylt Event GmbH has further developed the concept: additional light installations, an expanded catering offer with Austrian specialities (cheese, sausages) and a currywurst stand, a baking workshop for children, and performances by an illuminated pony team with a Christmas carriage.

Advent on the Island — Sheltered and Atmospheric
Sylt in December is rough, often stormy — and that's precisely why the organizers of Sylt Event GmbH chose the Neue Mitte Westerland. The central square in the heart of Westerland protects from the North Sea wind and forms the stage for the Sylter Wintermarkt, one of Germany's northernmost Christmas markets. Westerland is located in the municipality of Sylt in the district of Nordfriesland in the state of Schleswig-Holstein.
What to Expect at the Huts
The Advent huts open for around four weeks — curated by Sylt Event GmbH, in partnership with local associations and distilleries:
- Sylt Handicrafts — a rotating artist's hut presents changing craftspeople from the island
- Culinary Delights — Austrian specialities (cheese, sausages), mulled wine, punch, crêpes, currywurst, fresh winter dishes
- Gifts — jewellery, hoodies, regional brandies from small island distilleries
- Family Offerings — carousel, baking workshop for children, Santa Claus visits
- Atmospheric Lights — illuminated ponies and a Christmas carriage, light chains throughout the Neue Mitte
A Sylt Tradition Since 2018
Since its first edition in 2018, the Wintermarkt has become a firm fixture in Sylt's event calendar. Tourists who are on the island between the years combine it with beach walks, sauna visits, and New Year's Eve at Brandenburger Strand. Locals appreciate it as a social meeting point during the quieter pre-Christmas and post-Christmas period. Dogs are welcome, and the paths are easily accessible.
More Than a Christmas Market
Unlike town centre markets in Lübeck, Kiel, or Flensburg, the Sylter Wintermarkt is not a classic "Christkindl-Markt" but is designed as a winter market — it deliberately runs until January 2nd, so that the days between Christmas and New Year also contribute to the Advent atmosphere. On Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve, the huts have reduced opening hours (catering usually until the afternoon), and on all other days, there's a full programme.
