Tip
The Rhenish version of the Schützenfest is significantly more Catholic in character than the Westphalian one — the High Mass on Sunday morning is part of it. Welcome even as an outsider.
Niederbachem — Marksmen's Tradition in the Vorgebirge
Niederbachem is one of the 13 districts of the municipality of Wachtberg in the Rhein-Sieg district, located south of Bonn at the foot of the Vorgebirge hills. With around 2,000 inhabitants, Niederbachem is manageable, but club life is intense: At its center is the St. Sebastianus Marksmen's Brotherhood, which organizes the most important village event with its annual Schützenfest. The venue is the Sebastianushöhe — the name alone suggests that shooting has taken place here for generations.
The Marksmen's Square at Sebastianushöhe
The club's own grounds at Sebastianushöhe 5 include a festival hall, a target pole for the king's shooting, a shooting range, and a beer garden. For the festival, the hall is extended, outdoor areas are furnished with seating, and a large festival tent provides weather protection in case of changeable July weather. From the square, the view extends over the fields of the Vorgebirge to the Siebengebirge with Drachenfels and Petersberg — a backdrop that sets Niederbachem apart from other marksmen's squares in the region.
The Festival on the Second Weekend of July
The actual main Schützenfest in 2026 takes place on the weekend of July 11 and 12. The schedule follows Rhenish Schützenfest dramaturgy:
- Saturday, July 11 — Festival kickoff from 6 p.m. with assembly, salute shots, and a marksmen's ball in the festival tent with a live band or DJ. Welcome of the reigning monarchs and presentation of the king candidates.
- Sunday, July 12 — Assembly in the morning, High Mass in honor of Saint Sebastian, followed by a parade with music groups through Niederbachem. Lunch in the festival tent, in the afternoon king's shooting at the target pole. Crowning of the new king and queen, King's Ball in the evening.
In the run-up, on June 4, 2026, the Schützenliesel shooting (from 1:30 p.m.) and the team shooting (from 3:30 p.m.) will already take place — both competitions for members and friendly clubs that lead up to the Schützenfest weekend. Another accompanying event is the District Federation Parade on May 10, 2026, at Henseler Hof, followed by a "Kölscher Abend" (Cologne-style evening).
St. Sebastianus Marksmen's Brotherhood
The St. Sebastianus Marksmen's Brotherhood Niederbachem is part of the Federation of Historical German Marksmen's Brotherhoods (BHDS), Bonn-Rhein-Sieg district. The brotherhood cultivates Catholic-Rhenish marksmen's traditions with High Mass, devotion to Saint Sebastian, and social integration into village life. Events throughout the year — Easter shooting, Father's Day tour, district festival, main Schützenfest, St. Sebastian's Day in January — make the club one of Niederbachem's defining institutions.
Wachtberg and the Vorgebirge
The municipality of Wachtberg is characterized by its rural and bourgeois nature and is popular as a residential community for commuters to Bonn. Those who combine the Schützenfest with a weekend trip can visit the vineyards on the Drachenfels, hike through the vineyards near Adendorf, or enjoy the view from the Petersberg. Wachtberg viticulture is part of Germany's northernmost wine-growing region.
