German Windsurfing Championship at Brandenburger Strand Westerland — Wave, Slalom, Freestyle and Racing
Sylt, with around 18,000 inhabitants and a length of 38 kilometers, is the largest German North Sea island and part of the district of Nordfriesland in the state of Schleswig-Holstein. With its kilometer-long sandy beaches, constant wind, and pronounced wave action, Sylt has been one of Europe's best wave spots worldwide for decades. Westerland, the island's largest town, hosts Brandenburger Strand, one of the top locations for windsurfing, kitesurfing, and wave riding.
The California Surf Cup has been held annually on Sylt since 1984 — one of Germany's oldest and most renowned windsurfing events. The organizer is Choppy Water GmbH (brand California Windsurf Cup), which works in close cooperation with the Association of German Windsurfing and Watersports (VDWS) and Tourismus Sylt.
During the six days, the German Championships will be held in the following categories:
International professional athletes and top German athletes share the competition arena, collecting points for the world rankings simultaneously.
In addition to the competition, the festival grounds on the beach offer a diverse program: shopping stalls with boards and equipment, food tents, free morning yoga sessions, live DJ sets in the afternoon, and surfer parties in the evening. Admission to the entire festival and all parties is free — a concept that makes Sylt a magnet for watersports fans and sundowner lovers year after year.
The 2026 edition of the California Surf Cup on Sylt takes place from July 28 to August 2. For six days, Brandenburger Strand in Westerland becomes the arena for the German Windsurfing Championships — in the four disciplines of Wave, Freestyle, Slalom, and Racing.
The competitions start in the morning and often continue until late afternoon — depending on wind and waves. In parallel, the festival program on the beach creates the atmosphere: shopping stalls with boards and equipment, cocktail and snack stands, free yoga sessions, live DJ sets, and surfer parties in the evening, all with free admission.
