205 Concerts in 9 Weeks of Summer

The Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, SHMF for short, is a summer festival with a 41-year tradition. Since 1986, concerts have been held in 73 cities and 120 venues, stretching from Flensburg in the north to Hamburg in the south, with excursions to Denmark and Lower Saxony. The Hanseatic city of Hamburg – as the southernmost festival city – is one of the central locations with its two top concert halls, the Elbphilharmonie and the Laeiszhalle.

Hamburg Concerts 2026 – Stockholm in Focus

The festival theme for 2026 is Stockholm. Three concerts in Hamburg are particularly noteworthy:

  • July 4, 2026 – Elbphilharmonie Grand Hall: Opening in Hamburg with Ksenija Sidorova (accordion) and Fazıl Say (piano)
  • August 18, 2026 – Elbphilharmonie Grand Hall: Royal Swedish Orchestra with soprano Nina Stemme
  • August 24, 2026 – Elbphilharmonie Grand Hall: Xavier de Maistre (harp) with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic

World Stars and Young Talents

The SHMF is characterized by its combination of international top soloists and young talents. The 2026 festival edition brings together Yo-Yo Ma and Daniel Barenboim with the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, as well as Hilary Hahn, Ray Chen, Daniil Trifonov, and soprano Nina Stemme. Crossover programs – such as that of Swedish jazz trumpeter Nils Landgren or a concert by the pop band Roxette in Kiel on July 18 – complement the core classical program.

Festival Academy and Festival Orchestra

An important component is the Schleswig-Holstein Festival Orchestra, established in 1987, where young musicians from over 30 countries come together annually for a season. Masterclasses and workshops in mandolin, brass instruments, and other disciplines supplement the educational offerings.

One of Europe's Most Important Festivals

With a total budget of around 14 million Euros – funded by state subsidies, the main sponsor Famila, and private patrons – the SHMF is one of Europe's largest subsidized classical music festivals. Hamburg serves as the urban showcase for a festival that otherwise plays in castles, barns, churches, and factory halls in rural regions. Tickets for the Hamburg concerts are available via shmf.de or the Elbphilharmonie box office.
