The Mosel village becomes a gallery – 11 international artists from three countries in wineries and gardens
Winningen, the largest wine-growing village on the Mosel, famous for its Uhlen and Röttgen vineyards and home to the Moselland wine cooperative, has hosted the Winninger Kunsttage every two years since 2018. 2026 will see the 9th edition – a testament to the success of this format in decentralizing art in a confined space. The venue is not a single gallery or museum, but the entire village: around 15 to 25 stations are spread across wineries, private gardens, former workshops, courtyards, and residential buildings where artists showcase their works.
The curatorial selection for 2026 includes 11 international artists from the USA, Italy, and Germany. The spectrum ranges from contemporary painting and sculpture to photography, installation, and mixed media. Each station offers its own character: large-format paintings might hang in the historic vaulted cellar of a winery, sculptures might be displayed in a spring garden, or a site-specific installation might fill a vacant space.
Visitors explore the festival using a map provided by the organizers at the start. They wander on foot through the narrow streets of Winningen, getting to know the medieval village scenery – the high cross, the parish church of St. Peter, the slate-roofed houses – and entering spaces not normally accessible to the public. The connection between art and wine arises naturally: many wineries also offer wine tastings of their Mosel wines on the exhibition days, allowing visitors to enjoy a sip of Riesling or Spätburgunder between stops.
The program includes guided tours of the festival, where art historians and participating artists contextualize the works. A special highlight is the art party night on Saturday evening, when the entire village comes alive late into the night – with live music, open studios, and meeting spaces. The festival concludes on Sunday with a service featuring art in the parish church, giving the event a spiritual dimension.
The Winninger Kunsttage is part of the Rhineland-Palatinate Culture Summer and is one of the most prominent art projects on the Middle Mosel.
The 2026 edition marks the ninth iteration of the Winninger Kunsttage. The organizers confirm a selection of 11 international artists from three countries – USA, Italy, and Germany. The exact list of artists and locations will be communicated via the official website.
The stations are spread throughout the entire village. Visitors receive a map at the festival's start and can explore the village individually on foot. The opening hours of the stations are generally from 11 AM to 6 PM.
