Traditional Schützenfest in Hamminkeln-Loikum with King's Shoot and Coronation Ball
Loikum is a small district of the Lower Rhine town of Hamminkeln, in the Wesel district, on the border with Münsterland and the Netherlands. The village has about 1,200 inhabitants and is located in the flat landscape between farms, small woods, and the Issel river. Like many Lower Rhine villages, Loikum has a strong tradition of clubs – especially the St.-Antonius-Schützenbruderschaft, which shapes village life in many ways.
The St.-Antonius-Schützenbruderschaft Loikum is a traditional Catholic marksmen's association with roots in the medieval shooting tradition: protection of the village, preservation of customs, community, and the connection of shooting sports and faith. Today, the association is a vibrant village club that organizes its major Schützenfest annually, thus shaping the club life of the village.
Festival opening with coffee for seniors and honored guests in the afternoon (4:00 PM), Zapfenstreich (tattoo) at 7:00 PM, followed by the May King's Shoot for everyone from 8:00 PM. The Loikum Blaskapelle (brass band) provides musical accompaniment.
Opening at 1:30 PM with the flag-waving group and their demonstration. Traditional shooting club activities and club life during the day. In the evening, from 8:00 PM, the grand Festival Ball in the festival tent with the party band Herzschlag.
In the morning at 9:30 AM, the joint church service. The exciting highlight: the King's Bird Shoot between 2:15 PM and 3:00 PM – from which the successor to the reigning king Robin Hoffmann will be determined. In the evening, from 8:00 PM, the Inthronization and Coronation Ball, where the new king is crowned and opens the Schützensaal (marksmen's hall) with his queen and court.
The Loikum Schützenfest is not a mass spectacle, but a true village festival – with a manageable size, familiar faces, and established rituals. Visitors from outside are welcome guests and can experience the traditional Schützenfest experience on the Lower Rhine in its original form. The tapping of the keg, the coronation parade, the dancing on the festival tent floor – all of this has more intensity here than at the large shooting festivals in big cities.
If you are in Hamminkeln anyway, you can also visit the Wesel Castle, the Schermbeck industrial monument, the Hohe Mark Nature Park, or the Dutch border region with De Slangenburg Castle and Doetinchem.
The 2026 edition continues the traditional three-day Schützenfest concept. The successor to the reigning King Robin Hoffmann will be determined from the King's Bird Shoot on Sunday.
