Four days of Ferris wheel, bumper cars and Krake at the Rhine promenade
The Maikirmes Wesel marks the exact start of the season for Volksfeste (funfairs) on the Lower Rhine. From the eve of May Day until the following Sunday, the Rhine promenade Wesel transforms into a colorful fairground: bumper cars, Krake, Twister, and several high-rise rides stand side-by-side with shooting galleries, candy stalls, and classic Ferris wheels.
Opening on Thursday, April 30, 2026, from 12 p.m.. The fair then runs until 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, ending on Sunday, May 3, 2026, at 10 p.m.. A traditional element is the three-hour discount period from 2 p.m.: During this time, many rides cost significantly less – an offer especially for families and children. Admission is free; you only pay per ride or per item purchased.
A total of over 30 showmen are represented at the Maikirmes. In addition to the big classics – bumper cars, Twister, Krake, Wave Swinger, Ferris wheel – there are rotating high-rise rides. The snack stands offer classic fairground food: bratwurst, Schmalzkuchen (fried dough pastries), mushrooms, fries, crêpes, Magenbrot (gingerbread), and candied almonds. Lottery and shooting galleries are also part of the permanent inventory.
The Rhine promenade Wesel is the ideal location: directly on the Rhine, with a view of the river and the historic Wesel Citadel. The city in the western Lower Rhine region of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia is located in the Wesel district; the Maikirmes site is just a few minutes from the main train station. A special fairground atmosphere arises on the promenade, as water, ship traffic, and festive lighting merge into an almost cinematic backdrop in the evening.
Volksfeste have a long tradition in the Lower Rhine region and in Wesel: Schützenfeste (marksmen's fairs), Kirmes, and May Day celebrations shape the annual event calendar of many cities and towns. The Maikirmes Wesel is one of the larger spring fairs in the region and attracts visitors from the entire Wesel district, the neighboring Kleve district, and the northwestern Ruhr area.
The organizer is the City of Wesel with Wesel Marketing GmbH. The fair's family focus is the discount period from 2–5 p.m., during which many rides offer reduced prices.
