Centuries-old autumn fair on the Ems with rides and entertainment programme
The Michaelismarkt Weener has been documented as a late summer or autumn fair for centuries. Its name derives from the Christian feast day of Archangel Michael on September 29th, which was traditionally a market day in the Rheiderland. The current market sees itself in this tradition: less of a modern large folk festival, and more of a long-established tradition with a clear regional character.
Fairground operators set up carousels, children's rides, and smaller thrill rides in the central market area of Weener. Stalls offer sweets, toys, snacks, and seasonal specialities. The entertainment programme includes music, stage performances, and small hands-on activities for families. The atmosphere is familiar and regionally connected.
The Michaelismarkt is the autumn counterpart to the Johannimarkt in spring and, together with the Advent market in December, completes the festival calendar of the town of Weener. For the residents of the Rheiderland, it is a recurring meeting place where market fun, tradition, and conviviality come together.
Weener is easily accessible by train on the Emden–Münster line and via the federal highway network. The market is nestled within the tourist attractions of the Rheiderland, with the river Ems, traditional punt boats (Pünten), and rural marshland scenery. Visitors to East Frisia in late summer will find the Michaelismarkt a suitable occasion for a day trip to Weener.
The 2026 edition continues the successful concept: continuous market operations in Weener town centre on Saturday and Sunday. Families will find carousels and children's rides, while adults can enjoy food and drink offerings as well as market stalls. The market's regional connection is also evident in the participation of local associations and the musical entertainment.
The exact programme for 2026 will be published by the town of Weener in late summer. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years:
