1st Advent in front of the Willibrordi Cathedral — by associations, for Wesel
The Adventmarkt am Dom Wesel differs from many other Christmas markets in North Rhine-Westphalia with its clear concept: Exclusively local associations, organizations, and non-profit institutions present a “diverse potpourri of homemade products.” No discount mulled wine, no identical wooden hut architecture like in big city markets — but a real community market that makes social Wesel visible. From November 27th to 29th, 2026, it will open again on the Großer Markt in front of the Willibrordi Cathedral.
(Note: The official opening hours for 2024 were used as a basis; 2026 times will be communicated in the autumn.)
The exhibitors are Wesel's associations, parish communities, schools, aid organizations, and non-profit initiatives. They sell:
The proceeds benefit the associations — making your purchases a small donation.
The Willibrordi Cathedral is Wesel's landmark and the heart of the Großer Markt. The late Gothic hall church from the 14th/15th century — heavily destroyed in World War II and rebuilt in the 1950s–90s — forms the impressive backdrop. Illuminated after dark, the cathedral is particularly striking and makes the Advent market photogenic like few other small Christmas markets on the Lower Rhine.
A remarkable feature: The market uses reusable cups, which are cleaned at a central washing station — no disposable plastic, no disposable paper. An initiative that is not yet standard practice at many Christmas markets in this consistent manner.
A regular program item: the joint Christmas carol singing on Saturday evening at 5 PM — a simple but emotional moment that transforms the market from a consumer-driven event into a true community experience.
Wesel is the district town of the Wesel district on the Lower Rhine, with almost 60,000 inhabitants and an impressive history as a Hanseatic and fortress city. Today, Wesel is primarily known for its Rhine floodplain, the Willibrordi Cathedral, and the Auesee lake. The Adventmarkt am Dom is part of the "Weseler Winter", a series of Christmas events that liven up the city center from the 1st Advent to early January.
The Adventmarkt am Dom Wesel 2026 opens on the 1st Advent. In front of the impressive backdrop of the Willibrordi Cathedral, only Wesel's associations, parish communities, and non-profit organizations present handmade Advent decorations, homemade food, and specialties — a market for the community.
Reusable cup initiative with central washing station — no disposable plastic. The 2026 opening hours will be confirmed in the autumn on the official Wesel tourism website.
Free admission. Food and purchases at association stalls are paid for — the proceeds support the associations.

Christmas carol singing on Saturday at 5 PM is the emotional highlight. The cathedral is particularly photogenic in the evening — bring a tripod or a steady hand. Potato pancake stalls tend to sell out early.
