44th Pauken-Plunder-Promenade — three days of city festival on the Rhine promenade and in Wesel's city center from July 31 to August 2, 2026
The PPP-Stadtfest in Wesel is officially called Pauken-Plunder-Promenade — three words that outline the entire concept of the festival. This format has been held every summer since 1982 and reaches its 44th edition in 2026. From Friday, July 31 to Sunday, August 2, 2026, Wesel's Rhine promenade and city center transform into a huge festival ground with a fairground, flea market, a parade day, and several music stages.
The "Pauken" element refers to two aspects: music stages and the ceremonial parade day. The main stage is set up on the Kornmarkt, where live bands, DJs, and dance groups offer a continuous open-air program over three days. The repertoire ranges from cover bands and German Schlager acts to local newcomer bands. The Schützentag (marksmen's day) in Wesel is a historical element: a Großer Zapfenstreich (Grand Tattoo) with a ceremonial drum march, torches, and marksmen's associations takes place at the former citadel (now Wesel's Schlossplatz) — an impressive spectacle that connects the city festival day with historical depth.
The "Plunder" element is the large Brocante (flea market) on Sunday, August 2, 2026, along Fischertorstraße. Hundreds of vendors set up their stalls — antiques, vintage fashion, records, books, furniture, collectibles. If you're looking for a Lower Rhine treasure (Klever ceramics, old postcards, rustic furniture), this is the place. The Brocante attracts thousands of visitors annually from the Ruhr area and the Netherlands — Wesel is a well-known destination for flea market enthusiasts.
The Rhine promenade itself, the namesake third pillar, hosts the Kirmes (fairground): rides, shooting galleries, children's carousels, candy stalls, food stands. The Rhine forms the natural backdrop — cargo ships pass by, and on warm evenings, you can enjoy sunsets over the Lower Rhine. The combination of fairground bustle and Rhine views is the strength of Wesel's promenade, a feature no other city festival on the Lower Rhine offers in this form.
The PPP-Stadtfest traditionally spreads its program over three days:
The organizer is Wesel Marketing GmbH, the city's tourism and marketing company. They organize the PPP together with the showmen's association, local restaurateurs, the marksmen's associations, and the flea market associations. The professional organization behind the popular character is the reason why the format has been successful for 44 years.
Wesel is the district town of the Kreis Wesel on the Lower Rhine, with almost 60,000 inhabitants. A historic Hanseatic city with the famous 17th-century Citadel, the city center destroyed and rebuilt (World War II), and the spectacular Rhine promenade with views of the Rhine. The PPP-Stadtfest suits the city: large enough to attract crowds, small enough to remain charming.
On the Lower Rhine in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, large city festivals are an established tradition. The PPP is one of the oldest and largest in the region — many Dutch people from Arnhem and Nijmegen travel across the border to Wesel for the festival weekend. This German-Dutch mix gives the festival an international flair.
The 44th PPP runs for three days in Wesel: Friday opening and start of the fairground, Saturday main festival day with Tattoo at the Citadel, Sunday flea market in Fischertorstraße. Rhine views, folk festival atmosphere, and Lower Rhine tradition.
