Germany's largest free open-air literature festival — 17th edition from June 12 to 14, 2026 in the historic old town of Meißen
While other literature festivals operate in halls with limited seating and ticket prices, the Literaturfest Meißen takes a different approach: it's open-air, it's free, it's a city festival. Since 2010, the Middle Saxon city of Meißen has transformed its historic old town into a large literary stage for three days — and this has earned it the reputation in recent years of being Germany's largest free open-air literature festival.
The 17th edition from June 12 to 14, 2026, offers around 263 program items. The centerpiece: 115 author readings with 58 female and 57 male authors. In addition, there are 51 special children's and youth readings — as the festival explicitly sees itself as intergenerational. Further on the program: city tours with a literary focus, theater productions, musical-literary events, writing workshops, and readings in unusual settings (monastery courtyards, castle complexes, private gardens).
The distribution of the program across the old town is by design: 5 main stages mark the central reading locations — the Marktplatz as the main stage with the most prominent readings, the Heinrichsplatz with a more intimate atmosphere, the Theaterplatz, the Intercultural Stage at the Rote Schule (focusing on foreign-language and migration literature), the Tuchmachertor. In addition, there are 48 other reading locations: in the courtyards of historic bourgeois houses, in the alleys of the castle town, in monasteries and churches, in private gardens, and on viewing terraces overlooking the Elbe. This diversity turns every festival visitor into an explorer — you choose your own program, walk through the old town, and stumble upon unexpected readings.
Meißen is one of the oldest cities in Saxony — founded in 929 by King Henry I, it plays a central role in Saxon history. The city is famous for its porcelain (Meissen porcelain, produced since 1710), Albrechtsburg Castle (one of the oldest residential castle complexes in Germany), the Cathedral with its 4 towers, and the Cathedral Chapter — Saxony's liturgical and political power was based here. Literarily, the city has a rich tradition: humanists, church scholars, and later bourgeois writers worked here. The literature festival builds on this tradition without being limited to it — contemporary German-language literature is the focus.
Meißen is located in the Meißen district, in the heart of Saxony, on the Elbe River — half an hour's drive northwest of Dresden. With around 28,000 inhabitants, it is a medium-sized city that can transform into a literary metropolis through the festival. Thousands of visitors from Dresden, Leipzig, Berlin, Munich, and all over Germany come, many stay overnight in Meißen and the surrounding area. For booksellers, publishers, and authors, the festival is an important date in the early summer calendar.
