The small indie open-air at the Isseldeich — the counterpoint to Parookaville
When the soundchecks begin at the Isseldeich on the last weekend of August 2026, Wertherbruch — a district of Hamminkeln in the Wesel district with 800 inhabitants — will belong to a community of indie enthusiasts for three days. The Cheesecake Festival is not big, nor does it ever want to be: Capacity is strictly limited, and the first-come-first-serve principle leads to quick ticket sales every year. You don't come here to see and be seen, but for bands you would see in the capital for 70 Euros plus travel costs — framed by camping, breakfast, and a pond where semi-acoustic concerts took place in previous years.
The Lower Rhine is festival territory: Parookaville attracts 85,000 people per day in Weeze, and large open-air events rage in Geilenkirchen. The Cheesecake Festival consciously positions itself as a counterpoint — no higher, faster, further, but a slow festival. The local press described it as "the small festival at the Isseldeich," and a bbv-net.de article in 2024 explicitly titled it "Counterpoint to Parookaville and Co." The concept is working: 2024 saw the fifth edition, and 2026 will be the sixth.
Behind the festival is the registered association Cheesecake Music e.V., based in Hamminkeln. A collaboration partner is PopBoard NRW, the statewide funding agency for pop music. Both structures ensure that the festival is not dependent on major sponsors but remains true to its original spirit — established bands, young acts, personal atmosphere.
The ticket principle is radically simple: a single festival pass for 75 Euros (adults) covers three days of the festival, camping on the grounds, and breakfast on Saturday and Sunday. Children aged 5 to 13 pay 32.50 Euros, and toddlers under 4 pay 5 Euros — making Cheesecake a decidedly family-friendly festival, far from 21+ wristbands and hard liquor bars.
Hamminkeln is located in the western Lower Rhine region near the Dutch border, in the northern Wesel district. Wertherbruch itself is a scattered settlement district between the Issel and the Wesel-Datteln Canal. Its location away from the main autobahn routes is programmatic: those who come here come intentionally — and stay for all three days.
Festival Friday, August 28th, 2026, starts at 12:00 PM with the opening of the gates and the setup of campers on the grounds at Isseldeich 31. The show begins in the late afternoon; in previous years, early slots were deliberately used for acoustic and newcomer acts.
The second ticket phase opened on February 22nd, 2026, at 12:00 PM. As in all previous years, tickets are allocated on a first-come, first-serve basis, and the festival has sold out multiple times recently.
