Stralsund as a World Heritage City
Since 2002, the old town of Stralsund has been a UNESCO World Heritage site together with Wismar. The two Hanseatic cities are considered outstanding examples of North German brick Gothic architecture and Hanseatic urban development. UNESCO World Heritage Day is the day on which this heritage is celebrated and conveyed in a special way.
Nationwide Day of Action
World Heritage Day takes place nationwide on the first Sunday in June. All German World Heritage sites participate with their own programs. In Stralsund, the offerings include:
- Special guided tours through the World Heritage old town
- Concerts at historic locations
- Workshops for various age groups
- Digital and multimedia offerings
Each World Heritage Day is dedicated to a motto that underscores the importance of the World Heritage site for the present and future.
Part of a Festival Weekend
In Stralsund, World Heritage Day coincides with other events: it takes place parallel to the St. Johannis Monastery Festival and the Stralsund Harbour Days. This turns World Heritage Day into a whole festival weekend, during which the Hanseatic city showcases its history and its vibrancy equally.
Stralsund in the Vorpommern-Rügen District
The Hanseatic city of Stralsund is the district capital in the Vorpommern-Rügen district and the gateway to the island of Rügen. UNESCO World Heritage Day is an invitation to consciously experience the special value of the World Heritage old town.
