Anniversary edition of the running event through Borkum's dune landscape
Borkum is the largest East Frisian island and boasts an extensive dune landscape that becomes the perfect stage for an extraordinary running event in summer and late summer. The Borkumer Meilenlauf uses this natural backdrop for a format that clearly stands out from asphalt-dominated city runs: soft sand, gentle inclines, and the constant view of the North Sea and dunes.
The range of courses extends from the Piratenlauf for children, through short and medium distances, to the quarter marathon (10.55 km, four times the classic English mile plus extras). This makes the Meilenlauf a family event as well as a challenge for ambitious runners. The start and finish points on the island are carefully timed between the different distances.
With its anniversary edition, the Borkumer Meilenlauf celebrates its 20th running. The organizer is the traditional club TuS Borkum 1890 e.V., whose volunteer team has made the running event a fixture in the Northern German running calendar over the past years. Registration and bib collection are handled through the club's website and raceresult.com.
Borkum is accessible via ferries from Emden Outer Harbour. Early registration and timely booking of accommodation and ferry are recommended due to high demand. For many participants, the Meilenlauf also serves as an extended island weekend.
The anniversary year 2026 continues the proven format. The course utilizes the island's unique dune landscapes; start and finish points will be communicated by the organizer in the weeks leading up to the race date. The event typically attracts over 1,000 runners; including accompanying persons, helpers, and island guests, it creates an impressive running weekend.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by TuS Borkum 1890 e.V. in the summer. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years:
