Glamorous ball night at the State Opera under the Parisian motto PADAM! with star guest Katharine Mehrling
The Opera Ball of the Hannover State Opera is one of North Germany's most glamorous balls. Organized by the Lower Saxony State Theaters Hannover, this annual ball night upholds a tradition while simultaneously raising funds for the cultural work of the opera house and the theater. The ball combines classic elegance with artistic ambition: each edition is dedicated to a motto that shapes the program, decoration, and star guests.
The motto PADAM! refers to the chanson of the same name that Édith Piaf made famous in 1951. The 2026 ball is dedicated to the Parisian joie de vivre of the 1930s and 40s — the bohemian life, the chanson, the blend of melancholy and zest for life. Rooms will be decorated with Parisian cityscapes, Belle Époque posters, and atmospheric lighting. The musical program ranges from French classics to waltzes and tangos, as well as contemporary interpretations.
The German-French singer Katharine Mehrling is the evening's star guest. Mehrling, born in Heidelberg and equally at home at Berlin's Friedrichstadt-Palast and the Komische Oper Berlin, is considered one of the most important interpreters of contemporary German- and French-language chanson. Her programs are dedicated to Friedrich Hollaender, Marlene Dietrich, Édith Piaf, Kurt Weill, and contemporary composers. For the 2026 Opera Ball, she will present a program specially tailored to the PADAM! motto.
The main hall of the State Opera will be converted into a ballroom: stage, dance floor, bistro tables, boxes, galleries. Several side rooms and the foyer will also be used — a second dance floor with a DJ, an intimate lounge with a bar, and a lounge for quiet conversations. Patrons of the foundation have reserved seating in the boxes, while other guests can find places on the various levels.
A classic ball opening with a polonaise by the State Theater ensemble, the first waltz, and welcome remarks. Throughout the evening, dance music (Big Band) and concert sets (chanson, solo performances) will alternate. The highlight is the midnight show featuring contributions from the repertoire of the State Opera, the State Ballet, and guest artists. Afterward, the ball continues with DJ sets until the early morning hours.
Tickets are available in various categories — from box seats with champagne service to standing room tickets for a younger audience. Admission begins at 7 PM; cloakroom and bistro service are organized. Dress code: White tie, black tie, or dark suit for gentlemen, long evening gown for ladies.
The exact program for the midnight show and artist performances will be continuously updated by the State Opera.
