Cult stage run through East Frisia from Bensersiel to Leer with around 3,000 participants
Started in 1982 as a small East Frisian running event, the Ossiloop has developed into one of the largest multi-stage Volksläufe (popular runs) in Germany over four decades. Around 3,000 runners complete several stages through East Frisia every year over several weeks. The format is a mix of sporting competition, Volkslauf (popular run) atmosphere, and tourist exploration of the region.
The 45th edition in 2026 starts on Tuesday, April 28th, 2026, in Bensersiel on the East Frisian North Sea coast. Over the following weeks, the stages will lead the runners step by step through the landscape of East Frisia. The finish line will be reached on Friday, May 15th, 2026, at Fortuna Logabirum in Leer — a traditional finish point where the closing ceremony with awards for winners and participants takes place.
The charm of the Ossiloop lies in its combination of sporting seriousness and relaxed atmosphere. Families, hobby runners, ambitious amateur athletes, and seniors run side by side. The stage route structure — short and medium distances — makes the run accessible to many generations. Cheerleaders along the route, local clubs as marshals, and marquees at the stage finishes contribute to the cult atmosphere.
The finish at Fortuna Logabirum in Leer is the traditional endpoint of the event. Here, the runners gather after the multi-week stage marathon; here, the final award ceremony and the big closing festival take place.
As in previous years, the Ossiloop 2026 is a stage format spread over several weeks. There are several days of rest between each stage, during which participants can go about their daily lives and prepare for the next stage. Stage routes, start times, and course details will be communicated on ossiloop.eu.
