International Museum Day and Farmers' Market on the Stettiner Haff
The Fischerstube in Mönkebude opened in May 1996 — on International Museum Day 2026, Sunday, May 18, the museum looks back on 30 years of history. Nets, fish traps, tools, and photos tell of the hard and proud work of the Haff fishermen; since 2000, exhibits have also depicted the elements that have shaped life in the village and the region on the Stettiner Haff.
Mönkebude was first documented in 1244 — as the Slavic settlement Doblowitz, founded by monks from the Grobe monastery on Usedom (hence the name: "Mönchsbude" or "Monks' Dwelling"). Today, the village is a state-recognized health resort, with a harbour and bathing beach on the southern shore of the Stettiner Haff, within the Amt am Stettiner Haff (Vorpommern-Greifswald district, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern).
For its 30th anniversary, the Fischerstube combines special guided tours with a farmers' market in the village center. Regional producers from the Amt am Stettiner Haff will offer fish, honey, baked goods, and crafts. The event aims to foster encounters between the village community, summer guests, and museum friends — in the spirit of a North German local festival.
The exhibition focuses on Haff fishing and the history of Mönkebude as a fishing village and seaside resort. The building also serves as a tourist information center, arranging accommodation, bicycle rentals, and fishing licenses — a typical small, multifunctional village cultural center, characteristic of many Haff and Bodden coastal communities.
30 years after its opening in May 1996, the Fischerstube invites you to an anniversary day in Mönkebude on International Museum Day 2026. Special guided tours will explore the collection on Haff fishing and the village's history since its first documented mention in 1244. A farmers' market with regional producers will take place concurrently in the village center.
This event follows the tradition of International Museum Day, during which many local history museums in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern offer free admission, special exhibitions, and family activities.
