Autumn fair in Dortmund city centre
The Herbstkirmes Dortmund is, alongside the Karnevalskirmes (February), the freDOlino Osterkirmes (March/April), and the Bartholomäuskirmes Lütgendortmund (August/September), one of Dortmund's four major folk festivals (Volksfeste). It runs from October 2nd to 11th, 2026, in the city centre, bringing ten days of autumn mood to the city — just in time before the Christmas season kicks off.
The concept is classic fairground:
Unlike the freDOlino Osterkirmes (Fredenbaumplatz), the Herbstkirmes takes place in the Dortmund city centre — typically spread across Alter Markt, Hansaplatz, and the central pedestrian zones. This combines the folk festival with regular shopping traffic, creating a lively atmosphere in the city centre before the Christmas season.
The Herbstkirmes overlaps with the German Unity Day (October 3rd, 2026) — which marks the start of a busy weekend due to the public holiday. Tourists from the surrounding area often use the holiday for city centre visits, including a trip to the fair.
In the Ruhr area (Ruhrgebiet), the folk festival has a long tradition — an expression of the folk culture of a former industrial region. Cranger Kirmes in Herne (one of Germany's largest folk festivals), Rheinkirmes in Düsseldorf, Liboriusfest in Paderborn, and the Dortmunder Kirmesse form the folk festival calendar of North Rhine-Westphalia.
With the end of the Herbstkirmes on October 11th, the transition to the Dortmund Christmas City begins, which starts on November 19th, 2026, with the world's largest Christmas tree (45 m, 138,000 LEDs). This means the city centre has almost no event-free period in the fourth quarter — tradition without interruption.
The 2026 Herbstkirmes runs for ten days in the city centre, starting on Friday, with full showman operations on the weekend and family days during the week.
Free admission. Rides and stalls operate with individual prices from the showmen.
Accessible to the city centre via all underground lines (Reinoldikirche, Stadtgarten, Kampstraße) and on foot from the main train station.

Weekdays and early evenings are quieter and more family-friendly than weekends. German Unity Day (October 3rd) is usually very crowded.
