Närrische Sitzungen, Kinderkarneval and Afternoon Karneval in the Pinneberg district
North German Karneval has its very own charm — far from the strongholds on the Rhine, but with the same love for glittering costumes, lively dances, and sharp-witted sketches. The Moorreger Karnevalisten e.V. have been setting the pace for carnival activities in the municipality of Moorrege (Pinneberg district, Schleswig-Holstein) for decades.
The format has proven itself over the years and follows a clear structure:
The association's own groups perform on stage: the Showgruppe with its sketches, the dance troupes (Gardens) in several age groups with solo dancers (Tanzmariechen) and male dancers (Männerballett), and the music band „Zwischentöne“, which plays between programme items and during the dance segments. The carnival proceedings are led by President Ernst Ottenbacher and the council of eleven (Elferrat).
Moorrege is a municipality with around 4,800 inhabitants on the western edge of the Hamburg metropolitan region, in the Pinneberg district of Schleswig-Holstein. The marsh landscape along the Pinnau river and the proximity to the Elbe shape village life — and here, Karneval is one of the few centuries-old festival traditions not directly related to agriculture or seafaring. Throughout the year, the Moorreger Karnevalisten's show group also performs at partner clubs in Marne, Tornesch, and Wedel.
A special feature of the Moorreger: they actively participate in the traditional Rosenmontag parade in Marne (Dithmarschen), one of the largest carnival parades in Northern Germany. The event in Marne's town centre is the carnival season finale for the Moorreger dance troupes and show group before Lent.
The 2026 season followed the proven three-part structure. The Närrische Februarsitzung on Saturday, February 7, 2026 (8:00 PM–11:45 PM) opened the season with the grand stage programme: dance troupes, solo dancers, the sketch group, and musical interludes by 'Zwischentöne'.
On Sunday, February 8, 2026 (3:00 PM–5:30 PM), KiKaKoFe followed — the children's carnival as a big costume party with parades (Polonaise), games, and dance performances by the junior troupes. The finale was the Karneval am Nachmittag on Monday, February 9, 2026 (4:00 PM–6:30 PM) — the relaxed version for seniors and families with coffee, cake, and a shortened stage programme.
A week later, on Rosenmontag, February 16, 2026, the Moorreger dance troupes and show group paraded through Marne's town centre with other North German clubs in the traditional Rosenmontag parade.
Admission prices were sold through the association's own advance booking office. The 'Närrische Februarsitzung' regularly sells out early.
Moorrege is located northwest of Hamburg on the Pinnau river. By car: A23 exit Tornesch or Pinneberg, then take country roads for approx. 10–15 mins to Moorrege. By train: AKN station Tornesch (approx. 5 km), then take a bus or taxi from there.
