Annual shooting and village festivals in the Emden districts of Larrelt, Borssum, Twixlum, Petkum and others spread throughout summer 2026
Each of Emden's districts has its own established identity, shaped by agriculture, port activities, or village traditions. The annual Schützenfeste are a central element of this local identity. They provide an occasion for club members, residents, and guests from the neighborhood to come together for a weekend of meeting, socializing, and preserving customs.
The Schützenfeste usually follow a similar pattern: Friday evening, festival ceremony and club evening with music; Saturday, shooting competitions (especially the king's shoot), followed by a dance event with a band or DJ in the evening; Sunday, festive parade through the district, proclamation of the new king, and a relaxed closing.
A family day with a children's program is part of the festivities in many districts.Regularly held Schützen- and village festivals include those in Larrelt, Borssum, Twixlum, Wybelsum, Petkum, Uphusen, Marienwehr, Logumer Vorwerk, and Tergast, among others. The exact dates, festival schedules, and the respective bands or DJs are communicated by the local Schützenvereine – usually via club websites, local notices, and the printed event program from the Tourist Information office.
Admission to the festival grounds is generally free. Entrance fees are charged only for the evening dance events with live bands. The atmosphere is familial and community-oriented. For visitors from other districts or from outside, each of these festivals offers an authentic glimpse into Emden's rural-urban life.
The district Schützenfeste form an important social bond for the respective districts and allow visitors to experience Emden's rural-urban identity beyond the central downtown events. As the dates are organized decentrally, it is advisable to research directly on the websites of the individual Schützenvereine or via the city's Tourist Information before planning a visit.
Festive parades, dance events, king's shoots, and family programs generally follow the classic North German Schützenfest pattern. The atmosphere is familial, and participation is easily accessible.
The exact program for 2026 for each district will be published by the respective Schützenverein. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of North German Schützenfeste:
