Neighbourhood festival in Herne-Wanne — supported by a knightly order that keeps the district vibrant
In 1975, Wanne-Eickel was dissolved as an independent city through its incorporation into Herne, but the name lives on. Today, Wanne and Eickel are districts of Herne, with their own identity, charm, and a vibrant club scene. This is where the Mondritterschaft Wanne-Eickel has its roots — a club founded in 2010 by entrepreneurs and artists, seeing itself as a modern counterpart to traditional carnival clubs.
The Mondritterschaft adheres to a modern code of chivalrous conduct: community service, social commitment, local engagement. The club is led by five core members: Graf Hotte, Gerd Herzog, Volker Lange, Frank Tocholski, and Mustafa Kandil. Pastor Horst Heinrich was appointed an honorary knight in 2012 — a gesture that shows the club's recognition within the district.
The Mondritterschaft organizes neighbourhood festivals, promotes local social projects, and serves as a point of contact for many initiatives in the area. The family festivals at the DLRG station in Belgorodstraße are a recurring format — in cooperation with numerous clubs from Wanne-Eickel.
On Sunday, June 7, 2026, the Mondritterschaft will organize the next family festival at the DLRG station, Belgorodstraße, Herne-Wanne. The detailed program will be announced in the weeks leading up to the event — those familiar with previous years know what to expect: live music, a barbecue station, a tombola, children's activity stations, and a cake buffet from the women's groups of the participating clubs. Free admission.
The DLRG station on Belgorodstraße is not only the water rescue base for the district but also a club-friendly venue. The DLRG (German Life Saving Association) gladly opens its premises for local festivals — a gesture that the Mondritter reciprocate by supporting DLRG youth work.
Herne, with almost 160,000 inhabitants, is a classic Ruhr area city: mining history, multicultural present, vibrant district structures. It is precisely in Wanne-Eickel — where identification with the old city name is particularly strong — that civic engagement finds its most visible expression. The Mondritterschaft is part of this tradition: a civic and popular club that builds bridges between generations and cultures.
The Moon Knights' family festivals traditionally follow a low-threshold concept: live music (local bands or DJ), barbecue station, tombola, children's activity stations, cake buffet from the women's groups of the participating clubs. The DLRG station provides premises and outdoor areas. Proceeds support local social projects.
As in previous years, numerous clubs from Wanne-Eickel will participate — sports clubs, carnival clubs, social initiatives. The festival also serves as a meeting point for local stakeholders.
The specific detailed program for 2026 will be communicated on mondritterschaft.com.
