Premiere of the new after-work neighbourhood festival at Buschmannshof Wanne-Mitte
The Wanner Mondnächte was a popular neighbourhood festival in Wanne-Mitte for many years. With stages, live bands, and large crowds, it shaped the image of the district in the summer. However, in recent years, Stadtmarketing Herne noticed a shift: Needs have changed. Instead of a big stage and loud music, residents of Wanne and Herne desire a relaxed, cosy atmosphere — an after-work format with a lounge character. This led to the creation of Mondtreff, which celebrates its premiere at Buschmannshof in Wanne-Mitte on May 29 and 30, 2026.
As project manager Tina Dzierla explains, Mondtreff focuses on “comfortable seating, decorative elements, and lighting for a beautiful atmosphere.” The emphasis is on food, drinks, and socialising — not loud live performances. A curated ambient music playlist and small DJ sets provide the auditory framework, while sponsors like Herner Sparkasse, Stadtwerke Herne, and Warsteiner are responsible for the catering.
Despite the after-work lounge concept, Mondtreff offers selected live acts on its premiere weekend: On Friday, May 29, 2026, DJ Carib will play electronic beats from 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM. On Saturday, May 30, 2026, Los Gerlachos, a locally known duo, will take the stage from 8:00 PM. Also on Saturday afternoon (3:00 PM–6:00 PM): Children's games and activities, complemented by a demonstration by the Herne Black Barons, Herne's American football team. Special highlights include an inflatable astronaut, moon decorations, and a wine selection from Rheinhessen vintner Andreas Brummund.
Since its redesign in recent years, Buschmannshof in Wanne-Mitte has become the new neighbourhood centre: a traffic-calmed square with seating, trees, and catering options. With Mondtreff, Buschmannshof gets its first regular multi-day festival — a clear signal that Wanne-Mitte is to be upgraded as a district centre. Covered areas provide protection from rain, ensuring the festival is weather-independent.
Wanne-Eickel (officially “Stadtbezirk Wanne”) is one of Herne's four city districts and has around 50,000 inhabitants. The city of Herne (around 156,000 inhabitants in total) is located in the northern Ruhr area between Bochum and Recklinghausen. Wanne-Mitte is the historical core of Wanne-Eickel with its train station, market, shops, and cultural life. Mondtreff builds on the identity-forming tradition of the Wanner Mondnächte and translates it into a contemporary format — consciously not as a mass event, but as a neighbourhood meeting point with a focus on social interaction.
The Wanner Mondnächte has a successor: Mondtreff changes the concept — lounge atmosphere instead of a big stage, curated music instead of loud concerts. The premiere edition, May 29–30, 2026, tests the new format.
