The small spring funfair of Herne's west
The Frühlingskirmes Wanne-Mitte is a traditional neighborhood funfair in western Herne. For four days — from Thursday, March 5th to Sunday, March 8th, 2026 — showmen will take over the Buschmannshof and parts of the main street in Wanne-Mitte. Not an XXL format with a Ferris wheel and roller coaster, but a charming neighborhood funfair with family carousels, dodgems, shooting galleries, and all the classic stall favorites: almonds, crêpes, cotton candy, potato pancakes.
Wanne-Eickel and the Buschmannshof
The Buschmannshof has been the center of Wanne-Mitte for decades — the central square where markets and the funfair are held. Wanne-Eickel, an independent city until 1975 and part of Herne since then, has a distinct identity of its own — the small spring funfair is part of this local consciousness.
Kick-off of the funfair season in the Ruhr area
In early March, the Frühlingskirmes Wanne-Mitte traditionally heralds the start of the funfair season in the Ruhr area — before the large Pentecost and summer funfairs bring the XXL formats. The occasion is family-friendly, and admission is free.
When is it worth visiting?
With children, the early afternoon is ideal — many family rides start from 2 PM. For the evening atmosphere with a crêpe and mulled wine in hand, the evenings are perfect. Sunday, March 8th, is traditionally the busiest day — possibly with Sunday shopping in Wanne city center.
Getting there
By public transport: U-Bahn line U35 (Bochum HBF — Herne) — stop Wanne-Eickel Hauptbahnhof, from there a 5-minute walk. By car via the A42 (exit Wanne-Eickel) — parking is limited, public transport is recommended.
