Open Sunday with flea market in the Rose City
Uetersen, with around 19,000 inhabitants in the Pinneberg district of the state of Schleswig-Holstein, is one of the most traditional small towns in the Pinneberg Geest. The town is known far beyond the region as the 'Rose City' — since the 19th century, Uetersen has been the site of a significant rose-growing industry, the heritage of which is still visible today in the Rosarium at the Klosterkirche and the annual Rose Festival. The HerbstFest on the first Sunday in October is, alongside the Rose Festival, the most important city center event of the year.
The HerbstFest is designed as an Open Sunday: the city center shops open on a Sunday when they are normally closed, attracting visitors with special offers, discounts, and autumnal assortments. Simultaneously, the city center transforms into a large flea market — private individuals and commercial traders offer antiques, bric-a-brac, handicrafts, and curiosities. The spectrum ranges from grandma's teacup to vintage furniture.
The HerbstFest is more than just shopping. Stalls with autumnal products create atmosphere in the central squares: pumpkins, apples, walnuts, plum jam, potatoes, pickled vegetables. Beekeepers offer honey, regional brewers beer, bakers fresh pastries. Food trucks and snack stands provide bratwurst, crêpes, and mulled wine, which is in demand again from October onwards. Live music and activities for children complete the family-friendly program.
The Interessengemeinschaft Handel und Gewerbe Uetersen e.V. (IHG) has been organizing the festival for years. The IHG unites most of the city center businesses and sees the HerbstFest as an important boost against competition from outlets and online retail. In the Pinneberg district of Schleswig-Holstein, the HerbstFest is considered one of the most important autumn events for local retail.
The HerbstFest 2026, as every year, opens the city center on the first Sunday in October for a day of retail sales, combined with a city-wide flea market and autumnal market activities. The event attracts visitors from the entire Pinneberg district and the Hamburg metropolitan region.

Take the AKN train from Hamburg-Eidelstedt directly to Uetersen. By car, take the A23 (exit Tornesch/Uetersen). Parking around the city center; on October Sundays, it can get crowded — arrive early or use the train.
Free admission. Open Sunday: Shops open, special offers and sales. Flea market: Private individuals and traders.
Combine with a visit to the Rosarium at the Klosterkirche — in October, the last roses are blooming, and the Rosarium is freely accessible.
