North Germany's largest analogue games fair – 1,500+ games to try out on 7,000 m² at Hamburg Messe
While the German trade fair landscape features major computer and gaming events (Gamescom in Cologne, Dreamhack in several cities), the Spielemesse Hamburg is explicitly the analogue counterpart: board games, card games, role-playing games, dexterity games, children's games, educational games – all without a screen, but with dice, cards, game pieces, and tables. The slogan "digital detox" is programmatic and attracts an audience surrounded by digital devices in everyday life, seeking a weekend of analogue playtime.
The venue is the Hamburg Messe und Congress – one of Germany's largest exhibition centers. The Spielemesse uses an entire hall area at Entrance East (Bei den Kirchhöfen, 20355 Hamburg), covering approximately 7,000 m². This size allows for extensive game table zones, tournament areas, an Artist Area, a main stage, and special exhibitions, in addition to the exhibitor stands.
A characteristic feature of the fair: over 1,500 games are available for trial. Exhibitors (publishers, retailers, clubs, independent designers) provide their new releases for visitors to try. Visitors can spend hours at the game tables, be guided by publisher representatives, and then purchase what they liked. This distinguishes the fair from purely sales-oriented events: here, the focus is on playing, not just shopping.
In addition, there are tournament competitions in major games (Catan, Carcassonne, Magic: The Gathering, tabletop battles). On the main stage, there are talks on game design, workshops for children and adults, special demonstrations of rare games, and readings from game theory and board game criticism. An Artist Area showcases game illustrators and board game artists at work.
The Spielemesse Hamburg has been running since 2019 and has developed into North Germany's largest analogue games fair within a few years. The 2025 edition attracted over 12,100 visitors and 70 exhibitors. In the state of Hamburg, it complements the trade fair landscape with an analogue gaming format that gets its own stage in the Hamburg-Mitte district / St. Pauli quarter / Karoviertel.
The 2026 edition continues the established three-day format at the Hamburg Messe. Thousands of board game fans from Hamburg, Schleswig-Holstein, Lower Saxony, and Bremen are expected, based on the 2025 edition which saw over 12,100 visitors.
Program highlights for 2026 include: expanded family slots on Sunday, an enhanced indie designer area in the Artist Area, new tournament competition formats (especially in tabletop and strategy games), and an expanded workshop offering for schools and youth groups.
