ExtraSchicht — the Night of the Ruhr Area

ExtraSchicht is the world's largest industrial culture festival and has been the highlight of the summer calendar in the Ruhr area since 2001. On the night of June 27-28, 2026, it will transform 40 industrial monuments in 18 cities of the Ruhr area between Dortmund and Duisburg from 6 PM to 2 AM into open stages — with concerts, theater, light installations, performances, food trucks, and much more.

Four Locations in Dortmund

In 2026, four venues in Dortmund are participating:

• Deutsches Fußballmuseum — the national football museum located at the main train station (Hauptbahnhof Süd)
• Dortmunder U — an art and culture center with the iconic U-Tower
• LWL-Museum Zeche Zollern — arguably Germany's most beautiful colliery, a museum of the Landschaftsverband Westfalen-Lippe
• Zechenbahnhof Mooskamp — a returning venue, formerly the train station of the Gneisenau colliery

Industrial Culture as Identity

In the 20th century, the Ruhr area industrialized Germany with coal and steel. After structural change — the last colliery closed in 2018 — industry remains as industrial culture: collieries, coking plants, blast furnaces, and water towers have been converted into museums, concert venues, and art spaces. ExtraSchicht makes this transformation tangible once a year in a concentrated form — as an 8-hour marathon between 6 PM and 2 AM.

One Ticket — 40 Locations, Shuttle Included

The concept is brilliantly simple: One ticket is valid for all 40 venues. Additionally, there are shuttle buses between the locations and free use of all VRR public transport until 7 AM. This makes ExtraSchicht a unique festival that considers mobility and programming as an inseparable unit.

Dortmund Selection — Highlights

The Deutsches Fußballmuseum will feature special tours and sports performances. The Dortmunder U will use its 100th-anniversary context for light installations on the tower. The Zeche Zollern, with its iconic machine hall, will host concerts and theater. The Zechenbahnhof Mooskamp, as a newcomer returning venue, brings fresh programming to the north of Dortmund.
