Four days of New Music between Waschhaus, FLUXUS+ and Palais Lichtenau
Since 2001, the intersonanzen festival has brought together the contemporary music scene in Brandenburg every spring. It is organized by the Brandenburg Association for New Music (Brandenburgischer Verein Neue Musik e.V.) based in Potsdam. What began as a small composers' meeting has developed over a quarter of a century into the most important Brandenburg forum for New Music — and at the same time into one of the most distinguished festivals in northern Germany, focusing on premieres, international encounters, and multimedia formats.
The 26th edition, from June 4th to 7th, 2026, bears the motto "different traces": traces of composers who leave their own musical language — against homogenization. Composer Henry Mex takes over as Artistic Director. Over 20 premieres are on the program, along with concerts, sound installations, performances, soundwalks, and discourse formats. International guest ensembles are announced: Hezarfen from Istanbul, Ensemble Aventure from Freiburg, Quillo and UnitedBerlin. Soloists include soprano Pia Davila and accordionist Neža Torkar (the accordion is Instrument of the Year 2026).
intersonanzen 26 will be held at four venues in Brandenburg:
A special program strand honors the 100th birthday of American composer Morton Feldman: Pianist Jared Redmond will perform Feldman's works alongside pieces by Betsy Jolas. The festival concludes on Sunday, June 7th, with the Day of Music Schools at the Waschhaus — young musicians aged 8 to 25 will explore New Music in solo, chamber, and orchestral formations. A special performance: Maren Strack will perform with her "Bandoneon Dresses," a fusion of sound and movement.
The festival is funded by the State of Brandenburg, the state capital Potsdam, and several foundations. Festival cooperations with "Guten Morgen Eberswalde" and "Cottbuser Musikherbst" extend the program to other Brandenburg cities and strengthen the New Music scene throughout the state.
Artistic Direction: Henry Mex. Over 20 premieres will be spread across four days and four venues. The focus is on tracing — how individual musical languages assert themselves against homogenization.
External venue: Stadtmuseum Eberswalde in cooperation with "Guten Morgen Eberswalde". Detailed program at intersonanzen.de.
