A Stage in the Sand

There are concerts in concert halls, on festival grounds, in city parks – and then there are the Barefoot Concerts in Binz. The idea is simple: a small stage area on the beach, an artist or a duo or a trio, and an audience sitting in the sand, with the Baltic Sea behind them and the choice of whether to keep their shoes on or take them off. The format has become established on the Baltic Sea coast in recent years; in Binz, it takes place every Thursday evening in the summer at beach access point 09, just south of the pier.

The program deliberately focuses on singer-songwriters, solo acts, and small acoustic ensembles – music that works without bombast and can unfold in the open-air acoustics of the beach. Young, up-and-coming musicians are featured alongside more established artists who are rarely seen in such an intimate setting. Genre spectrum: Folk, Indie, Acoustic Pop, occasionally Chanson, Jazz, or Blues. The organizers describe the format as "Concert enjoyment, but different – barefoot in the sand, with the Baltic Sea at your back and the wind in your hair.".

How the Concept Works

Concerts start at 7:30 PM every Thursday. Those who arrive on time often experience the sets in the golden evening sun; on clear days, the sun sets during the concert, visible over the bay. Bring your own blankets, sand cushions, or thin beach mats – there are no fixed seats. The acoustics of the open beach present a unique challenge for the artists, mastered through reduced, often acoustic sound systems.

Who Attends?

The audience is a mix of summer tourists who happen upon the event and island residents who know the format and specifically plan their Thursday evenings in the summer for it. Families are welcome, and the format is child-friendly (although very young children may not always appreciate the quiet atmosphere). Anyone visiting Binz on a summer Thursday should remember this date: it's one of the quietest and most beautiful hours the Baltic Sea resort has to offer.
