Volksfest at Taurastein
Burgstädt is located at Taurastein in the Mittelsachsen district of Saxony, about 20 km north of Chemnitz. With around 11,200 inhabitants, Burgstädt is a small but surprisingly lively town — with a distinctive town center, the town hall, the Albertinum (the former post office, now a cultural center), and the nearby Taurastein with its viewpoint. The Stadtfest on the first weekend of October is the social highlight of the year, bringing tens of thousands of visitors to the town center for three days.
38m High Ferris Wheel on the Anger
The hallmark of the Stadtfest Burgstädt is the large Ferris wheel — 38 meters high — on the Anger. From its highest point, it offers a panoramic view of the town, Taurastein, and the surrounding Mulde valley, and is the highlight of the amusement rides mile, which is set up on the Anger and in the surrounding streets. Alongside it are carousels, roller coasters, game stalls, and the classic food stands of a German Volksfest.
Several Stages — Rock, Schlager, Country
Several stages are spread across the market square and the Albertinum courtyard: the market stage with Schlager, pop, and rock bands, a second stage in the Albertinum courtyard for cover bands and smaller acts, alongside country concerts and folk music. The stage music is deliberately broad — from Schlager stars on Saturday evening to country on Sunday afternoon — to cater to all age groups.
Local Crafts Market, Flea Market, and Fireworks
Three special program points define the weekend: The Heimatmarkt (local crafts market) on Saturday in the Albertinum courtyard brings together regional vendors from Mittelsachsen — bakers, honey producers, ham smokers, farmers' associations, wine and sparkling wine producers. The large flea market on August-Bebel-Straße on Sunday attracts bargain hunters from the entire district — from antiques and collectibles to bric-a-brac. The highlight is the fireworks display on Sunday evening, which transforms the sky over Burgstädt into a sea of colors and brings the festival to a spectacular close.
Town Center as a Pedestrian Zone
During the Stadtfest, the Burgstädt town center is completely converted into a pedestrian zone — car traffic is blocked, and parking around the town center is free. This traffic calming makes the market a pleasant stroll through the festival, without the usual city traffic noise. This is ideal for visitors from Chemnitz, Mittweida, or Geringswalde — public transport is worthwhile, and Burgstädt train station is just a few minutes from the festival grounds.
