Stadtbühne Vohenstrauß — Open-Air Theater at Friedrichsburg
The Stadtbühne Vohenstrauß is the voluntary citizens' theater group of the Upper Palatinate district town of Vohenstrauß (Neustadt an der Waldnaab district, Bavaria). It traditionally performs its summer open-air plays in the castle garden of the historic Friedrichsburg — a 16th-century Renaissance castle that is now the town's cultural center. After financial challenges in 2025, the Kultursommer 2026 marks the restart under the chairmanship of Johannes Pausch.
Two Productions in Summer 2026
The Kultursommer 2026 will feature two plays in parallel — a folk play and a family play:
- "Der Geisterbräu" by Joseph Maria Lutz (Bavarian comedy, tickets €19) on May 30/31, June 6/7, and June 27/28, 2026
- "Rapunzel" based on the Brothers Grimm in the stage adaptation by Johannes Pausch with music by Franz Adam (family play, tickets €16) on July 11/12, 18/19, and 25/26, 2026
Rapunzel — Family Play with Original Music
The Rapunzel production is an in-house creation of the Stadtbühne. Stage writer Johannes Pausch — also chairman of the association — adapts the Grimm fairy tale for the open-air stage, and Upper Palatinate composer Franz Adam contributes the original music. The production is aimed at families with children and anyone who appreciates fairy tale material in a modern form.
Friedrichsburg as a Venue
Schloss Friedrichsburg, built in the second half of the 16th century under Friedrich von Pfalz-Vohenstrauß, is the most striking Renaissance building in the Upper Palatinate. The castle garden, with its historic walls, turrets, and linden trees, forms a perfect open-air theater stage — the castle courtyard will be equipped with a grandstand and a small stage, with lighting and sound handled by the Stadtbühne's technical team.

The Stadtbühne Vohenstrauß presents its 2026 family production in the Renaissance setting of Friedrichsburg. Six performances between July 11 and July 26 — Friday and Saturday evenings each.

By car via the A6 exit Pfreimd/Trausnitz or via the B14. By train to Vohenstrauß (Weiden-Bayerisch Eisenstein line), then a 10-minute walk to Friedrichsburg.

Open-Air Note
In case of rain, the performance will be moved to an alternative venue or postponed. Weather-appropriate clothing recommended; bring a seat cushion.
