Over 30 years of potato tradition with the longest potato table and peeling competition
The Piumer Potato Market — "Piumer" is the historical name for Borgholzhausen — has been a fixture in the OWL event calendar for over 30 years. The date for 2026 is the third weekend in September, September 19 and 20. The town center of the nearly 9,000-inhabitant town on the northern edge of the Teutoburg Forest transforms into a large market with a potato focus for two days.
The festival's trademark is "the potato table winding through the streets" — a long table that runs across the town center and offers culinary potato specialties in all variations. Baked potatoes, fried potatoes, potato soup, potato pancakes, potato salads from different regions — a colorful overview of what can be made from the tuber.
The potato peeling competition is a magnet for families and competition fans alike. Participants of all ages peel against the clock — whoever produces the longest continuous peel wins. In addition, there are threshing demonstrations with flails (in cooperation with local agricultural associations), where the traditional threshing process is demonstrated.
Over 80 stalls line the market streets — crafts, food from regional farmers, specialties, woodwork, pottery, and association-supported action stands. A special feature: the Kiepenkerle (traditional peddlers) and costume groups from the region showcase the East Westphalian folk tradition with visible appearances in the market. Live music plays at several locations.
The organizer is the Verkehrsverein Borgholzhausen e.V., led by Jürgen Brömmelsiek. The association markets Borgholzhausen for tourism and has been organizing the potato market weekend since the beginning. Inquiries from exhibitors should be directed to [email protected].
Borgholzhausen is located in the northern district of Gütersloh, directly on the Hermannsweg on the ridge of the Teutoburg Forest. In recent decades, the town has developed from a purely agricultural community into a tourist town — the Teutoburg Forest-Eggegebirge Nature Park and the nearby Ravensberg Castle are the natural attractions. The potato market is its most important recurring signature event.
The Verkehrsverein Borgholzhausen e.V. invites you to the annual Piumer Potato Market from September 19 to 20, 2026. As in previous years, over 80 stalls will line the market streets — crafts, food from regional farmers, specialties, and association-supported action stands.
The long potato table stretches across the town center and offers the full range of potato-based specialties. In addition, the potato peeling competition, threshing demonstrations with flails (in cooperation with local agricultural associations), live music, and appearances by Kiepenkerle and costume groups ensure a full program.
