Christmas market in Bönkersche Steinbruch with natural stage, around 70 stalls and live music
The Adventszauber Borgholzhausen has a backdrop that no other Christmas market in the Gütersloh district shares: the Bönkersche Steinbruch, which has been repurposed as a natural stage. Amidst the rock walls shaped by wind and weather, a Christmas market emerges every first weekend of December, boasting a unique atmosphere. The organizer is the Verkehrsverein Borgholzhausen e.V.
Around 70 stalls are spread across the quarry and the adjacent paths: mulled wine and punch, gingerbread, stollen, cookies, bratwurst, and regional specialties from Ostwestfalen-Lippe. Additionally, there are craft stalls offering wood carvings, felt work, ceramics, handmade jewelry, and Christmas decorations. The selection clearly leans towards handmade items – a pleasant contrast to the large commercial Christmas markets in Münster or Bielefeld.
The natural stage in the quarry is the acoustic centerpiece. Live acts perform Christmas music, choral singing, brass ensembles, and folk adaptations. The natural rock acoustics lend the sound a special depth – an experience that differs from the usual loudspeaker sound systems of many Christmas markets.
In 2026, the Adventszauber runs from Friday, December 4th to Sunday, December 6th – the traditional 2nd Advent weekend. This strategically positions the market between the larger markets on the 1st and 4th Advent.
Borgholzhausen is a small town in the Gütersloh district, located by the Teutoburg Forest. With just under 9,000 inhabitants, it is one of the small but characterful communities in the region. It is known for the Borgholzhausen Summer Academy, the May Day festival tradition, and the annual Potato Market – plus the Adventszauber.
Those already traveling for the Adventszauber can enrich their weekend with additional activities. Hiking trails in the Teutoburg Forest, the nearby Schloss Holte-Stukenbrock with its safari park, the Bielefeld Botanical Garden – all within a 30-minute radius. Accommodation options are available in several country hotels and guesthouses.
