Family festival with historical and modern games in the Rhön
The Games Festival is one of the most popular weekends in the event calendar of the Franconian Open-Air Museum Fladungen. Game stations are set up in the museum's courtyards and meadows, where children, parents, and grandparents can try their hand at various activities – historical pastimes like Schussern (playing marbles) and Stöckeln (walking on stilts) are featured alongside modern games from current productions.
A highlight is the mobile interactive travelling exhibition Murmiland. Marble castles, elaborate marble runs, and marble pinball machines can not only be admired but also played with. In addition, there are old courtyard games, skill stations, and quieter board game corners. The mix bridges the gap between generations and makes the everyday culture of past times playfully accessible.
The Franconian Open-Air Museum Fladungen is one of the three major open-air museums in Lower Franconia and is located on the outskirts of Fladungen in the Bavarian Rhön. Covering around 12 hectares, it showcases historical residential and farm buildings from the Rhön, along with gardens, animals, and workshops. With the Games Festival, the world of past populations is brought to life as a shared family program – a format that has established itself as a popular event over the years.
The 2026 edition transforms the museum grounds into a playground for two days: hands-on stations will be set up in the courtyards, smaller play areas on the meadows, and board games and quiet games will be arranged in the historical houses. The focus is on the travelling exhibition Murmiland with marble castles, marble runs, and marble pinball machines, which can be actively played with, not just observed.
Classic game forms like Schussern (playing marbles) and Stöckeln (walking on stilts) are featured alongside current family games. The concept is deliberately aimed at multiple generations simultaneously – children, parents, and grandparents often play together.
