Folk music, traditional costumes, and dances in the open air in the Rhön
»Tracht und Tanz in Franken« is a one-day themed Sunday at the Fränkisches Freilandmuseum Fladungen, focusing on Franconian folk culture. Costume groups, brass bands, and folk dance groups from the Rhön-Grabfeld district and all of Lower Franconia perform among the historic farmhouses – a backdrop that could hardly be more authentic.
The museum at Bahnhofstraße 19, Fladungen, is one of the three Bavarian open-air museums and focuses on the Rhön region. Across more than 13 hectares, over 25 historic buildings – farmhouses, barns, mills, workshops – from the entire region have been dismantled and faithfully reconstructed. A living open-air museum that showcases not only the architecture but also the daily life of the Rhön farmers and craftspeople.
During the festival day, costume groups from various associations offer dance performances – Franconian shepherd dances, ribbon dances, star dances. Brass bands play, traditional costumes are shown and explained. Visitors can participate in group dances, observe rural crafts, and try their hand at the museum houses.
Fladungen is located at the interface between Bavaria (Rhön-Grabfeld district), Hesse, and Thuringia, and is the northernmost town in Bavaria. This makes the Rhön a special melting pot: the traditional costumes and dances shown here often go back to cross-border traditions. The UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Rhön is part of the charm of the open-air museum.
The themed Sunday 'Tracht und Tanz in Franken' 2026 is part of the annual program of the Fränkisches Freilandmuseum Fladungen. Costume, brass music, and folk dance groups from the Rhön-Grabfeld district showcase their traditions among the historic farmhouses, mills, and workshops.
The program includes dance performances, traditional costume presentations, folk music, and participatory activities. Admission to the museum (8 EUR adults, 6 EUR concessions) includes the entire festival program. The museum collection – over 25 faithfully reconstructed original buildings – remains accessible in parallel.
By car via the B 285 from Bad Neustadt an der Saale. Parking available at the Freilandmuseum. By train to Mellrichstadt, then bus or taxi to Fladungen. Seasonally, the »Rhön-Zügle« – a historic steam train – runs between Mellrichstadt and Fladungen.
