Traditional Summer Fair on Marktplatz Auf dem Schilde
The Sommerkirmes Steinfurt-Borghorst is one of the traditional Volksfeste (popular festivals) of northern Münsterland. The venue is the Marktplatz Auf dem Schilde in the heart of Borghorst's town center – one of the two districts of the twin town Steinfurt. From August 1st to 3rd, 2026, showmen will set up their rides, transforming the square into a festival ground for three days.
Steinfurt is a twin town comprising the two districts of Burgsteinfurt (with its castle and old town in the west) and Borghorst (in the east, formerly an independent industrial town). Both have their own character and events. The Sommerkirmes is distinctly a Borghorst event – similar to how Burgsteinfurt has its own fair dates in autumn and around Christmas. The 'Auf dem Schilde' market square is the traditional Borghorst festival site.
The program follows the classic Münsterland fair schedule: rides for all ages, food stalls offering bratwurst, fries, potato pancakes, sweets, crêpes, and cotton candy. A summer alternative to mulled wine: cocktails at a small bar. A carousel, a swing ride, dodgems, children's rides. Typically opens on Saturday at 2 PM.
The audience comes from Steinfurt and the surrounding Münsterland communities – Münster and Rheine are both about half an hour away. The Sommerkirmes is a typical family and youth event: families in the afternoon, young people in the evening, possibly live music or a DJ late at night.
Steinfurt is the district capital and is located in the far northwest of North Rhine-Westphalia, on the border with Lower Saxony. The twin town of Burgsteinfurt and Borghorst has around 35,000 inhabitants. Tourists are drawn to the town by the Steinfurt moated castle (one of the largest moated castles in northwestern Germany) and the Bagno Park – one of Germany's oldest landscape parks. Those combining the Sommerkirmes with a day trip will find plenty of options.
The 2026 edition runs on the first August weekend according to the established Borghorst format. Opening on Saturday afternoon, operating until Monday evening.
