Herbstkirmes Borghorst — Tradition on the 4th October Weekend
As October settles into the western Münsterland, the Herbstkirmes (Autumn Fair) in Steinfurt-Borghorst ushers in the transition to the darker season. From October 24th to 26th, 2026, showmen, rides, and food stalls will gather around Borghorst's market square, "Auf dem Schilde". The fair traditionally opens on Saturday at 2 PM.
A Fixed Date in Borghorst's Calendar
The Herbstkirmes follows a proven rhythm: it takes place every year on the 4th Sunday in October — starting on the preceding Saturday and ending on the following Monday. Also known colloquially as the "Muffenmarkt", it complements the "Neuer Markt" with carousels, stalls, and showman attractions. Borghorst families and visitors from surrounding districts have been coming here for generations.
Program — What to Expect
- Rides for young and old — from children's carousels to more dynamic rides for teenagers
- Stalls and food stands with classics: candied almonds, crêpes, potato pancakes, fries, bratwurst, mulled wine
- Shooting galleries and game stalls for families
- Festive atmosphere with music from the rides and local clubs
Steinfurt-Borghorst — District in the Steinfurt District
Borghorst, with nearly 21,000 inhabitants, is the largest district of the district town Steinfurt in the Münsterland region. Known for its textile tradition and the St. Nikomedes Collegiate Church, the market square, along with St. Nikomedes and the historic townhouses, forms the heart of the town center. Steinfurt itself is located in the Steinfurt district in North Rhine-Westphalia, not far from the Dutch border.
History and Roots
The Herbstkirmes Borghorst is one of the fixed folk festivals of the northern Münsterland. The combination of a traditional market event and a showman's fair connects residents, clubs, and visitors from outside the area across generations. Showmen, some of whom have been coming to the Borghorst fair for decades, make it a supra-regional attraction in the Steinfurt region.
