Annual beach festival of the municipality of Blekendorf on the Hohwacht Bay — with live music and variety show
The Sommerfest am Sehlendorfer Strand is a firm fixture in the annual calendar of the municipality of Blekendorf in the Plön district of Schleswig-Holstein. The festival takes place annually at the end of August or in September on the beach section in front of the Tourist Information — between beach chairs, dunes, and the Baltic Sea. The organizer is the Sehlendorfer Strand Tourist Information, which designs the program together with the mayor and the municipality.
The municipality of Blekendorf comprises eight districts (Blekendorf, Friederikenthal, Futterkamp, Kaköhl, Nessendorf, Rathlau, Sechendorf, and Sehlendorf) and is located on the Hohwacht Bay, one of the most beautiful coastal stretches of the Schleswig-Holstein Baltic Sea coast. The Sehlendorf beach stretches for almost four kilometers and accommodates around 800 beach chairs — one of the largest beach chair fleets in the region. The municipality's motto — „Living where others go on holiday“ — also shapes the character of the summer festival: less mass crowds, more village community by the sea.
The summer festival begins in the early afternoon with live music on the beach stage. Local and regional bands play hits from several decades — from beat and Schlager to maritime sounds. Culinary delights such as bratwurst, fish rolls, crab sandwiches, draft beer, and North German specialties are offered at club stands. For families, there is a children's program with games on the beach.
The centerpiece is the „Bunter Abend“ (variety show) starting at 7:00 PM: a diverse stage program of live music, club performances, awards, and dancing together against the backdrop of Hohwacht Bay. The festival traditionally ends at 9:30 PM — with a view of the sunset over the Baltic Sea on clear evenings.
The summer festival is part of a series of summer events in Hohwacht Bay. In Blekendorf and Sehlendorf, these include the Over-70s Party, the Beach Flea Market event, farmers' markets, and the annual Flens Beach Cleanup action. The close integration with tourism shapes the region — the Sehlendorfer Strand Tourist Information serves as a hub for guests and locals alike.
The municipality of Blekendorf has around 1,300 inhabitants; in summer, several thousand holidaymakers are added. The summer festival is one of those events where both worlds — the village community and seasonal guests — meet on equal footing. Admission is traditionally free, and the festival is financed by sponsors, the Tourist Information, and the culinary stands of the clubs. Thus, it is both a social anchor and a tourist highlight of late summer.
The Sehlendorfer Strand Tourist Information confirms the summer festival as an annual event of the municipality of Blekendorf — the exact date for 2026 will traditionally be announced in spring via the official website and notices in the Tourist Information. Based on experience, the date falls between the end of August and mid-September, on a Saturday with the main program starting in the early afternoon.
As in previous years, visitors can expect a beach festival with live music, culinary stands from local clubs, a children's program, and the traditional 'Bunter Abend' in the late afternoon. The beach stage in front of the Tourist Information will host local and regional bands. The festival concludes at sunset over Hohwacht Bay — one of the most beautiful backdrops on the Schleswig-Holstein Baltic Sea coast.
Note: The exact date for 2026 and participating bands will be communicated by the Sehlendorfer Strand Tourist Information on the official website sehlendorfer-strand.de.
