Whitsun medieval market on Germany's only reconstructed motte castle
The Turmhügelburg Lütjenburg is not just a medieval park, but a scientifically reconstructed defensive structure from the 12th century – the only one of its kind in Germany. On an artificially piled hill (the motte, which gives it its name), there is a faithfully reconstructed residential tower with a palisade and an outer bailey. This makes the site ideal as a venue for an authentic medieval festival.
Lütjenburg is located in the north of the Plön district, at the transition from Holstein Switzerland to the Hohwacht Bay on the Baltic Sea coast. The small town with its typical Holstein thatched and half-timbered houses is worth a visit even without a medieval festival – the medieval event adds a special touch to the region's early summer calendar.
On the Whitsun weekend, the grounds around the motte castle transform into a multi-layered medieval camp. Throughout the area, you'll find craftsmen demonstrating their skills (blacksmiths, leatherworkers, dyers, potters), merchants with period-appropriate goods (clothing, jewelry, food), and warrior reenactment groups presenting their camp life. Music groups with historical instruments – hurdy-gurdy, bagpipes, shawm – fill the air from several corners simultaneously.
The festival places special emphasis on the children's program: archery for beginners, pony rides, baking stick bread over an open fire, weaving, campfire stories, and hands-on craft activities. Adults can learn more about the function and inhabitants of a 12th-century motte during castle tours – education meets fun.
Regular program highlights include the combat demonstrations by reenactment warriors and the medieval fashion show, where historical costumes are presented. Concerts by historical music groups round off the evening. Those who come in traditional costume or self-assembled medieval clothing will fit in seamlessly.
The Förderverein Turmhügelburg Lütjenburg confirms the Mittelalterey 2026 for the Whitsun weekend: Saturday, May 23, 2026 (11:00 AM–10:00 PM), and Sunday, May 24, 2026 (11:00 AM–5:00 PM). The reconstructed defensive structure will be open both days for the medieval market atmosphere.
