Christmas market in the old town with Bavaria's largest advent calendar
The Dachauer Christkindlmarkt takes place in the historic old town around the Rathausplatz, near Dachau Castle. For over 45 years, the market organized by Dachauer Christkindlmarkt e.V. has been a fixture of the pre-Christmas atmosphere in the Dachau district and beyond.
Arguably the most striking feature is the giant 300-square-meter advent calendar on the facade of the town hall – according to the organizers, the largest in Bavaria. From December 1st to 23rd, a calendar door is opened daily at 7:00 PM, and a raffle is held. The tickets cost €1.50, with proceeds going to charitable causes.
Traditionally, the festive Engerlszug (angel procession) winds through the old town for the opening. An artists' market takes place on the rear town hall terrace from Friday to Sunday. The program ranges from spectacular artists to evening bands, providing atmospheric entertainment.
The market is open Mondays to Fridays from 3:00 PM to 8:30 PM and Saturdays and Sundays from 12:00 PM to 8:30 PM. The backdrop of historic buildings, festive lighting, and the nearby Dachau Castle lend the Christkindlmarkt its special charm.
Dachau is located in the district of Dachau of the same name in the Bavarian administrative region of Upper Bavaria, northwest of Munich. The town, with its distinctive castle complex and well-preserved old town, forms a particularly atmospheric setting for the traditional Christmas market.
