A September night, around 50 co-hosts, an entire city full of culture
The Greifswald Night of Culture is the annual gathering of Greifswald's independent cultural scene. On a Friday in early September, around 50 co-hosts open their houses, courtyards, and halls between 5 PM and midnight — from bookstores to galleries and workshops, to the old cemetery and the city harbor.
The program ranges from acoustic concerts, choir performances, and DJ sets to readings, poetry slams, and theater monologues, as well as dance, film screenings, workshops, and light installations. Contributions of 30 to 45 minutes in length are preferred — many program items are repeated several times so that visitors can explore different locations.
The night traditionally opens at 5 PM with the "Singing Balconies" in Schönwalde II — a district where residents sing into the evening from their balconies with choir groups or solo. The idea consciously signals neighborhood culture beyond the city center.
Greifswald is part of the Vorpommern-Greifswald district in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The university and Hanseatic city combines a lively student scene with a rich independent cultural scene — the Night of Culture makes this diversity visible for everyone for one night a year.
On Friday, September 11, 2026, Greifswald will once again become a continuous cultural stage. The deadline for co-hosts to register is early July, so the final program will be set by late July/early August.
