Ten days of Volksfest at the foot of Dachau's Old Town
The Dachauer Volksfest is known beyond the city limits and attracts hundreds of thousands of guests annually to the Ludwig-Thoma-Wiese at the foot of Dachau's Old Town. For ten days, beer tents, amusement rides, showman stalls, and culinary delights combine to create a classic Bavarian Volksfest. Dachau is a 'Große Kreisstadt' (major district town) and the seat of the district of the same name in the Upper Bavaria administrative region.
The Volksfest opens with a festive prelude: a concert by the band Ois Easy on the eve of the festival, a town concert in front of the town hall, and a parade up to the festival grounds. In the large festival tent, the mayor performs the beer tapping ceremony, officially opening the festival. This marks the beginning of a lively festival period with brass music, party bands, and a true 'Wiesn' atmosphere.
The program includes a senior citizens' afternoon, a special children's afternoon with reduced ride prices, and the Dachauer Bergkriterium, a cycling race through the Old Town. The highlight is the grand fireworks display, which is set off over Dachau Castle and attracts thousands of spectators. The castle and the Old Town provide an impressive backdrop.
The Dachauer Volksfest is one of the social highlights of the year in the Dachau district and a regular meeting place for clubs, families, and visitors from the greater Munich area. It upholds the tradition of Upper Bavarian Volksfeste with its festival tents, customs, and showman attractions.
