Medieval Advent Market in the reconstructed castle keep in Ostholstein
The Turmhügelburg in Lütjenburg is not a classic museum — it's a living castle experiment. Reconstructed based on archaeological finds from Holstein and under the scientific supervision of the State Office for Archaeology Schleswig-Holstein, it shows what a medieval lowland castle looked like and how it functioned in the 12th and 13th centuries. Structural accuracy, craft demonstrations, and historical programs make the site one of the most unusual historical locations in the region. The Advent market fits into this tradition: no mulled wine stands among fir branches, but a market atmosphere with a medieval flair.
On Saturday, November 28, 2026, the Turmhügelburg grounds will open from 11:00 AM to 8:30 PM for the Advent market. Traders will offer handicrafts — hand-poured candles, pottery, leather goods, jewelry, carved wooden figures. Food stalls will provide visitors with mead, beer from regional breweries, lard bread, potato pancakes, stick bread, and spiced mulled wine. A fire in the middle of the castle courtyard will warm hands and give the event its special mood. In the evening, a traditional candlelight service will take place — a moving experience during the dark Advent season.
Lütjenburg is located in the Plön district of Ostholstein, a few kilometers from the Baltic Sea coast and Hohwacht Bay. The town itself is characterized by half-timbered houses; the surrounding area is dominated by forests, lakes, and rolling hills. Visitors to the Advent market can combine their visit with a walk along the Sehlendorfer Binnensee nature reserve or on Hohwacht beach — an experience even in winter that showcases the cultural depth of Schleswig-Holstein far from the big cities.
On November 28, 2026, the Turmhügelburg opens its gates for the annual Advent market. On the grounds of the reconstructed lowland castle in Lütjenburg, market stalls with handicrafts, food stalls, a bonfire, and a stage for medieval music will be set up. The highlight in the evening is the candlelight service.
