About Behrensdorf Lighthouse Opening

On selected days, the municipality of Behrensdorf/Ostsee opens the listed Neuland Lighthouse to visitors. Those who climb the 179 steps are rewarded with a 360-degree panorama at a height of 40 meters over the Hohwacht Bay, the hinterland of the Plön district, and, in clear weather, as far as Fehmarn. At the foot of the tower, a small flea market with bric-a-brac, household goods, and maritime odds and ends from the region takes place in good weather. Admission to the tower is free. The event is organized by the municipality of Behrensdorf/Ostsee together with the local tourist information office.

Behrensdorf on the Hohwacht Bay

Behrensdorf is located in the Plön district (Schleswig-Holstein state) directly on the Baltic Sea, on the southern shore of the Hohwacht Bay between Lütjenburg and Heiligenhafen. The municipality, with just under 800 inhabitants, is a destination for families, cyclists, and water sports enthusiasts during the summer months – and it has a landmark that is visible from afar: the Neuland Lighthouse.

The Neuland Lighthouse – A Monument from 1915

The octagonal brick tower was built in 1915/16 for military-strategic reasons and began operation in 1918. It closed the gap in maritime signaling between Fehmarnsund and Kiel Fjord. The 40-meter-high tower was manned by lighthouse keepers until 1982; its light has been extinguished since 1996, and it has since served as an early warning signal tower for the Bundeswehr firing ranges at Todendorf and Putlos. Today, the tower is a listed building and is only accessible to the public on a few open days a year. Those who climb up conquer 179 steps – and can even get married in the tower: the wedding room under the lantern can accommodate up to ten people.

What awaits you on the open day

  • Ascent to the 40 m high Neuland Lighthouse (179 steps)
  • Panoramic view of the Hohwacht Bay, the inland, and – weather permitting – the island of Fehmarn
  • Flea market at the foot of the tower (only in good weather)
  • Encounter with locals and regular guests of the municipality
  • Free admission, ascent at your own risk

Nestled in the Hohwacht Bay

The open day is part of a small series of events with which Behrensdorf repeatedly puts its lighthouse in the spotlight – in addition to the large Lighthouse Day in summer (with sea shanty choirs, DLRG program, and catering), there are individual "Open Tower Days" distributed throughout the season. Those who want to explore more of the region can combine the visit with a day at Behrensdorf-Strand beach, an excursion to the Sehlendorfer Binnensee nature reserve, or a stop in neighboring Hohwacht.

Behrensdorf Lighthouse Opening — edition 2026

On Saturday, May 16, 2026, the municipality of Behrensdorf/Ostsee will open the Neuland Lighthouse to visitors between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM. Those who dare to climb the 179 steps will be rewarded at the top with a wide view over the Hohwacht Bay and the hinterland of the Plön district. In good weather, a small flea market at the foot of the tower complements the event.

The open day on May 16, 2026, is the first regular opportunity of the season to experience the Neuland Lighthouse from the inside. Between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM, visitors can climb the 179 steps and enjoy the panorama at a height of 40 meters. From the lantern room, you can see – depending on the weather – the island of Fehmarn, the steep coast towards Heiligenhafen, and the blooming rapeseed fields inland. In front of the tower, residents from Behrensdorf set up their flea market stalls – household goods, books, toys, maritime decorations – provided the weather cooperates. Free admission, no elevator, sturdy shoes recommended.
