Ascent to the Neuland Lighthouse on the Hohwacht Bay with a flea market at the foot of the tower
Behrensdorf is located in the Plön district (Schleswig-Holstein state) directly on the Baltic Sea, on the southern shore of the Hohwacht Bay between Lütjenburg and Heiligenhafen. The municipality, with just under 800 inhabitants, is a destination for families, cyclists, and water sports enthusiasts during the summer months – and it has a landmark that is visible from afar: the Neuland Lighthouse.
The octagonal brick tower was built in 1915/16 for military-strategic reasons and began operation in 1918. It closed the gap in maritime signaling between Fehmarnsund and Kiel Fjord. The 40-meter-high tower was manned by lighthouse keepers until 1982; its light has been extinguished since 1996, and it has since served as an early warning signal tower for the Bundeswehr firing ranges at Todendorf and Putlos. Today, the tower is a listed building and is only accessible to the public on a few open days a year. Those who climb up conquer 179 steps – and can even get married in the tower: the wedding room under the lantern can accommodate up to ten people.
The open day is part of a small series of events with which Behrensdorf repeatedly puts its lighthouse in the spotlight – in addition to the large Lighthouse Day in summer (with sea shanty choirs, DLRG program, and catering), there are individual "Open Tower Days" distributed throughout the season. Those who want to explore more of the region can combine the visit with a day at Behrensdorf-Strand beach, an excursion to the Sehlendorfer Binnensee nature reserve, or a stop in neighboring Hohwacht.
The open day on May 16, 2026, is the first regular opportunity of the season to experience the Neuland Lighthouse from the inside. Between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM, visitors can climb the 179 steps and enjoy the panorama at a height of 40 meters. From the lantern room, you can see – depending on the weather – the island of Fehmarn, the steep coast towards Heiligenhafen, and the blooming rapeseed fields inland. In front of the tower, residents from Behrensdorf set up their flea market stalls – household goods, books, toys, maritime decorations – provided the weather cooperates. Free admission, no elevator, sturdy shoes recommended.
Throughout the day, the 179 steps can be climbed at your own risk. You can find the complete program of all Behrensdorf events at behrensdorf-ostsee.de.
