Tradition for over 75 years
The Chamer Volksfest – the Volks- and Spring Festival of the city of Cham – boasts a tradition of over 75 years and is one of the largest spring festivals in the Oberpfalz. It is organized by the »Verein zur Förderung öffentlicher Veranstaltungen und kultureller Bestrebungen der Stadt Cham e.V.« (Association for the Promotion of Public Events and Cultural Endeavors of the City of Cham) on the Volksfestplatz Cham in the Cham district (Bavarian Forest).
Ten Days of Festivities
For over ten days, visitors can expect a classic Bavarian Volksfest with a festival tent, showmen and amusement rides, market stalls, and regional specialties. Each day has its own theme:
- Opening: Opening concert, ceremonial beer tapping, and free beer to kick things off
- Sports Day: Competitions in the stadium at Further Straße
- Mother's Day: Mother's Day brunch in the festival tent
- Father's Day / Giro d’Cham: Traditional scooter, Vespa, and vintage car meet with a blessing of vehicles at St. Jakob's Church
- Senior's Afternoon: Tea dance with traditional music in the festival tent
- Football Day: Charity football matches
- Festival Sunday: »Klingendes Cham« (Sounding Cham), international music festival with a grand parade and fireworks
Klingendes Cham
The highlight and conclusion is Festival Sunday with the international music festival »Klingendes Cham«: Music bands parade through the city in a grand procession, and the day concludes with a spectacular fireworks display. The Volksfest is thus known far beyond the city limits and is a major social event in the region's spring calendar.
