Chamer Straßenmusikfestival — a young tradition in the Bavarian Forest
Cham, the district town of the Cham district and the "Gateway to the Bavarian Forest," established a new summer format in 2024: the Straßenmusikfestival. After a successful premiere, it will already be in its second edition in 2026 and is thus on its way to finding a permanent place in the cultural calendar of the Upper Palatinate.
Cham in the Cham District — Hub of the Upper Palatinate
Cham is the seat of the district of the same name in the state of Bavaria and is located on the Regen river, on the border with the Bavarian Forest and near the Czech border. The city center with its historic market square, the Cordonhaus Church, and the baroque town hall is the natural stage for a street music festival that attracts citizens and tourists from the entire Bavarian Forest region.
Format: three days, all styles
The festival is deliberately inclusive — professionals and amateurs stand side by side on stage. Program structure:
- Friday — Festival opening with a party cover band
- Saturday — Performances by youth orchestras (District Association Cham in the North Bavarian Music Association), evening main concert
- Sunday — Actual street music festival: dozens of soloists and groups distributed throughout the city center, in the market square and side streets. Simultaneously, Sunday shopping in Cham's stores
From the Cantissima Choir to the Cover Band
The musical range reflects the festival's goal: "as colorful as a rainbow." Classical ensembles perform alongside hard rock bands, soloists next to thirty-piece choirs. The finale is traditionally a larger concert with the choir Cantissima Cham and a band — a sing-along finale at the market square.
Community-supported, free of charge
The festival is a deliberate initiative by the city of Cham: free, low-threshold, decentralized. It aims to showcase music clubs, youth formations, and professionals simultaneously — and to liven up the city center on the weekend before the school holidays.
