An Old Summer Custom

The Johannifeuer is a traditional custom that is maintained in many places in Bavaria around St. John's Day (June 24) and the summer solstice. In the municipality of Pemfling, in the district of Cham, the Fire Brigade Youth is responsible for organizing this festival – an example of how customs and volunteer engagement work together.

Fire and Conviviality

The centerpiece is the large bonfire lit outdoors. Originally, the Johannifeuer were intended to provide protection and celebrate the power of the sun; to this day, the fire is a unifying element around which people sing, celebrate, and spend time together. Catering with food and drinks ensures physical well-being.

Fire Brigade Youth in Action

The youth department of the Pemfling Volunteer Fire Brigade organizes the festival and ensures – fitting for the custom – the safe handling of the fire. In the Upper Palatinate, Johanni and Sonnwendfeuer (Midsummer bonfires) are public events that must be registered with the municipality and are burned on largely vegetation-free areas.

Meeting Point in Summer

The Johannifeuer is more than just a campfire: it is a summer meeting point that brings the village community of Pemfling together and attracts guests from the district of Cham. The event strengthens cohesion and keeps an old Upper Palatinate custom alive.
