Two weeks of culinary festival centered around the robust Glanrind cattle – restaurants in the Donnersberg district serve specialties of the traditional cattle breed from West Palatinate.
The Donnersberger Glanrindwochen are a district-wide culinary event that puts the Glanrind in the spotlight – a traditional cattle breed from the western Palatinate's Glantal valley. For two weeks in March, participating restaurants in the Donnersberg district will offer Glanrind dishes on their menus.
The Glanrind is an old German cattle breed originating from the Glantal valley in West Palatinate. These robust, tricolor yellow animals are undemanding, long-lived, and particularly well-suited for extensive grazing in the low mountain ranges of the Northern Palatinate. In the mid-20th century, the breed was on the brink of extinction due to competition from high-performance dairy breeds; today, it is classified as an endangered livestock breed and is preserved through targeted breeding programs. Marketing the meat in regional gastronomy is an important component of this preservation effort.
Restaurants from all over the Donnersberg district participate in the Glanrindwochen, from Kirchheimbolanden to Rockenhausen, Eisenberg, and Winnweiler. Each participating establishment will feature its own Glanrind specialties on the menu – from braised dishes and roasts to roulades and tartare, as well as creative modern interpretations. The variety of preparations also showcases the potential of this high-quality meat.
The Glanrindwochen are embedded in a broader strategy by Donnersberg-Touristik to highlight regional products and producers. They align with similar events such as the vintage wine tasting in May or the wine and orchard fruit promotions in late summer and autumn. The short supply chain from pasture to plate is part of the message: regional, close to nature, high-quality.
The Glanrindwochen 2026 will mark the culinary start of spring in the Donnersberg district. For two weeks, participating establishments will add Glanrind specialties to their menus. During this time, guests can specifically try the meat of the old Palatinate cattle breed – sometimes prepared classically, sometimes with modern interpretations.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the Donnersberg Tourism Association in February. The structure will follow the proven framework of previous years.
